Jeff Hardy suspended 60 days

So much for Jeff Hardy's Money in the Bank chances at WrestleMania 24. He has been suspended 60 days by WWE.

The suspension was announced today on WWE.com. The Stamford, Conn.-based company wrote that "In accordance with its Substance Abuse and Drug Testing Policy, WWE has suspended Jeff Hardy for 60 days, for his second violation of the company’s policy."

WWE spokesman Gary Davis would not say what drugs were involved. Davis said there have been about 30 suspensions under the WWE substance-abuse and drug-testing policy begun last year. The policy requires tests for steroids and other drugs.

Hardy's first suspension under the company's drug policy came in late July 2007. That suspension was for 30 days. A wrestler faces a 30-day suspension without pay for a first violation, a 60-day suspension for a second violation and firing for a third violation. Performers are tested at least four times a year.

Last August, WWE suspended 10 wrestlers for ordering drugs, mostly human growth hormones, in violation of policy.

Hardy was scheduled to be a part of the company's showcase event, WrestleMania 24, on March 30 in Orlando, Fla., in the usually high-flying, ambitious Money in the Bank match, where the winner has to climb a ladder to secure a brief that contains a contract for a WWE title shot at any period within the next year.

Given Hardy's recent push, including a World title shot against Randy Orton at the Royal Rumble, it was not inconceivable that he would win the Money in the Bank match. He qualified by beating Snitsky on February 18, 2008.

As of late on Monday Night Raw, he had been feuding with Chris Jericho, another competitor in the Money in the Bank match. On March 10, Hardy lost the Intercontinental title to Jericho, ending a six-month reign.
