Smackdown: Mysterio makes Mania announcement
By ANDY MCNAMARA -- SLAM! Wrestling
With No Way Out in the rear view mirror and WrestleMania coming up fast, each week becomes more and more crucial. Although their bodies are battered from the Elimination Chamber, Batista and MVP square off for the second week in a row with MVP guaranteeing victory. Rey Mysterio also makes a major WrestleMania announcement, and receives a "big" surprise to finish off his night. From San Diego, California it is time for another edition of Smackdown!
Edge comes out with his Edge Heads and discusses his world title WrestleMania match against The Undertaker. He reviews how both of them are undefeated at the big show, and how he will end the Dead Man’s streak. The lights go down and Taker appears to
Match 1: Money in the Bank Qualifying Match- Shelton Benjamin vs. Jimmy Wang Yang
Shelton Benjamin is so athletically gifted, and always puts on a show stealing performance in the Money in the Bank match. Benjamin and Yang exchange impressive high flying manoeuvres -- just imagine how incredible a bout with these two would be if they were given some decent in ring time. Benjamin picks up the victory and once again is heading to WrestleMania.
WINNER: Shelton Benjamin
Match 2: Jesse & Festus vs. Deuce & Domino w/ Cherry
Festus’ transformation when the bell rings is so entertaining, one has to wonder how much more effective the gimmick could have been if used on Eugene a couple of years back. After Festus clears house Jesse gets tagged in and is then isolated by Deuce and Domino. Deuce’s foot connects in the air with Jesse’s nose on the outside and it looks to be legitimately broken. Eventually the babyface duo regains control as Festus launches Jesse from up high down on Domino for a 1-2-3.
WINNERS: Jesse & Festus
Match 3: Big Daddy V w/ Matt Striker vs. Shannon Moore
Squash alert! Big Daddy V tosses the tiny Moore around like a rag doll for the entire match. Despite the odd bits of leg kick offence V nails a Samoan Drop and puts the finishing touches on with a running elbow drop.
WINNER: Big Daddy V
Match 4: Batista vs. MVP
Does MVP ever defend his U.S. title anymore? MVP targets the injured neck of Batista and puts an exclamation point on his series of attacks with a running kick to the head on the outside while The Animal was draped over the ring apron. The U.S. champion then focuses on neck based submissions and just like last week, have been in complete control for the majority of the contest. Following several near falls MVP goes for the Play Maker, however, Batista reverses out, nails him with three straight spinebusters, and then plants his foe with the Batista Bomb.
Match 5: Kane vs. The Great Khali
This will not be pretty ladies and gentleman ... not one bit. After Khali shoves Kane The Big Red Machine start landing right hands on the giant. The two switch momentum quickly with Khali sinking in his vice grip on Kane’s neck. Khali moves to a head squeeze, but Kane is able to push back off the rope and fall on top of him for the three count. Kane’s face turns nearly purple as The Great Khali does not break the hold right away.
The WreslteMania montage of The Undertaker is shown. It is both impressive in the streak itself, and of how many awful opponents Taker has fought!
Match 6: Chuck Palumbo vs. Matt Jackson
Not too much to this one, as the second squash of the night has Palumbo winning via the Full Throttle.
WINNER: Chuck Palumbo
Match 7: Main Event- Rey Mysterio vs. Chavo Guerrero
Rey Mysterio comes out to a huge pop in his hometown, and made the announcement that he will have to undergo bicep surgery and therefore miss WrestleMania. Vickie Guerrero is rolled out and states that she doesn’t give a damn if he is hurt or not and makes him take on Chavo. Chavo then comes out in what should be these two warriors usual 4-star match up. Guerrero hones in on the injured right biceps of Rey, who cannot seem to get out of the gate. Mysterio is in survival mode as he hits a running West Coast Pop off the apron to the outside. Rey Rey nails the 619, but is too weak to pull himself up for the Droppin’ the Dime, and it costs him. Chavo misses the frog splash and Mysterio is able to quickly roll up his nemesis for the three count. After the win Vickie Guerrero yells that Rey deserves more punishment after colliding with her last week. Out comes The Big Show who makes short work of Mysterio with a massive chokeslam following some serious abuse on the injured biceps.
