ECW: Dreaded hat does in Morrison's title hopes
By MATT BISHOP - SLAM! Wrestling

Tonight on ECW on Sci-Fi: The ECW Championship is up for grabs as the champion, CM Punk defends his title against the man he won it from, John Morrison. Should be a good one!

Match #1 - Kane (Hell, Fire & Brimstone) vs. Mark Henry (Silsbee, TX)

We are LIVE! from Bakersfield, Calif. and we lead off the show with two guys who probably wouldn't have been caught dead wrestling Tuesday night at 10 p.m. a few weeks ago.

The two go back and forth with standard big man offense before Kane starts getting the better of things. A frustrated Henry goes to the outside and grabs a chair and is actually disqualified before even hitting Kane with the chair.

Winner via disqualification: Kane

Post match, Henry delivers the World's Strongest Slam on the chair and leaves Kane in a heap in the ring.

The crowd was really into that match, probably because it was only the first or second match they saw all night.

Coming up: It'll be a mega ratings draw as Kelly Kelly takes on Layla and the ECW Championship is on the line when CM Punk battles John Morrison!

Match #2 - Jamie Noble (Hanover, WV) vs. Nunzio (Rockland County, NY)

Pre-match, we get a set of clips "Courtesy of Jamie Noble" that highlight his mad skillz.

This match, as Joey Styles so astutely points out, is a battle of two former Crusierweight Champions (remember when that title actually meant something back in the day?).

A lot of mat-based offense early, but Nunzio gains a slight advantage with a Billy Gunn-style Fameasser from the top rope, but Noble decided he had enough and first drops Nunzio's back over his knee and then hits a gut buster for the pin.

Winner via pinfall: Jamie Noble

Up next: Kelly Kelly (and what appears to be her new front -- I'm not complaining) takes on Layla!

Match #3 - Layla (Miami, Fla.) w/ The Miz vs. Kelly Kelly (Jacksonville, Fla.)

Kelly is selling the beatdown that Beth Phoenix (GLAMAZON!!!) gave her Monday night on Raw. The Miz (HOO-RAH!) gets on the mic before the match and tells her that he said he'd make her life miserable and that he's doing a pretty good job of it.

As you could expect, this match is a total gong show, but a huge "KELLY!" chant actually fires up and about five seconds later, Layla picks up the pinfall.

Winner via pinfall: Layla

Post match, Balls comes out to check on Kelly

This Friday on Smackdown!: Rey Mysterio vs. Finlay!

Match #4 - Elijah Burke (Jacksonville, Fla.) vs. Shannon Moore (Whispering Pines, NC)

This match is all Burke. The end comes for Moore when Burke hits the Outer Limits elbow drop, gets a two-count and then sets Moore up for the Elijah Express, which finishes him.

Winner via pinfall: Elijah Burke

Backstage, The Miz and John Morrison trade verbal barbs. Most notable: Miz is wearing a magnet with a baby chicken (or, a chick). Hardy har har.

Match #5 - ECW Championship - Challenger John Morrison (Los Angeles, Calif.) vs. Champion CM Punk (Chicago, Ill.)

This match is getting a real late start (11 p.m. ET), so it'll be a short one (that's what she said), so that's disappointing

Morrison in control early, wrapping Punk's own arms around his throat in an attempt to choke him out. But Punk is able to rally with a heavy head kick and then a springboard crossbody block. He then starts to deliver some heavy Muay Thai offense with some knees, fists and kicks.

Slowly, The Miz starts to make his way out to the ring with Punk in control of the match. Miz becomes a ringside observer.

After a series of near falls, Punk loads Morrison up for the GTS, but sees Miz and just stands there for long enough to allow Morrison to get out and cradle Punk for an extremely close two count.

With Morrison stalking Punk, Miz throws his hat at Morrison, causing him to turn around, punt the hat, but be distracted long enough for Punk to roll him up for the three count!

Winner via pinfall and STILL ECW Champion: CM Punk

Post match, Morrison, to put it lightly, is extremely, extremely cheesed off and we are out.

In what has been the norm lately, I find myself neither satisfied nor dissatisfied with ECW. Like I've said before, it continues to be non-offensive. Also, this match two weeks in a row in which there has been five matches. Obviously, they have to be on the short side, but I think I like it, especially with the Smackdown! talent exchange as it allows a lot of different guys (or gals) to make it on the show. See you next week!
