Countdown to WWE Cyber Sunday
By SLAM! Wrestling Staff

Tonight's the night that WWE's fate lies in the hands of its fans, in more ways than you would immediately think.

You see, given some of the options for tonight's matches, especially the "pick the opponent" bouts, WWE has opened a window of opportunity for its hardcore following to vote against the grain and potentially usher in a new era by sending Vince McMahon a clear-cut message of who they want to see on top.

Essentially, this is the ultimate focus group. Let's see who the spotlight will shine on.

MAIN EVENT: WWE HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH

Randy Orton vs Shawn Michaels OR Jeff Hardy OR Ken Kennedy

SLAM! Predictions

Jon Waldman

By every God-given right, Jeff Hardy should win the vote and get a dry run as a main eventer. If HBK gets voted in, there will be a lot of suspicion as to whether the votes are legit or not. In the end, I expect Orton to retain over Jeff, after interference from a jealous HBK, who kicks the holy hell out of the younger Hardy.

Bob Kapur

As much as the TV has been geared towards HBK, I think Jeff Hardy will squeak out a narrow win in terms of the vote. This may be for the best, as Michaels may still not be 100%. Hardy vs Orton should be fun, with Orton retaining.

Greg Oliver

My pick is Jeff Hardy for all the reasons I said last PPV: it makes the IC title mean something again - a logical stepping stone to the World title. Whomever "wins" the voting will lose to Orton anyway.

Matt Mackinder

We all expect Orton to face Michaels here and really, that makes the most sense. But this is WWE here, folks. Whomever Orton faces, expect outside interference from the two that didn’t get the votes. That being said, I do see HBK winning the “fan vote,” but losing to Orton, possibly in a cheap finish. After all, this is WWE and only WWE can blow big events.

WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE MATCH

Batista vs. The Undertaker (Special referee - Steve Austin OR Mick Foley OR JBL

SLAM! Predictions

Jon Waldman

WWE has been pushing JBL as the ref of choice, so you gotta figure he goes in. WWE has also done a great job of rebuilding JBL as a heel, so he's going in as a heel ref. What does this mean? Simple - heel ref means screwy ending; either one of these guys turns with him, or, and definitely a more entertaining scenario, JBL DQ's both guys and declares no winner, thus the belt is vacated, just in time for Edge to regain his strap at the Survivor Series in a mini tournament.

Bob Kapur

Though Austin would seem to be a no-brainer pick, I would prefer Foley winning, just because they could play up his history with 'Taker. Austin will ref straight down the middle and Taker will end up winning. Afterwards, Santino Marella will come out to badmouth Austin and eat a Stunner.

Greg Oliver

Haven't we seen these guys face off before? What made anybody think we'd want to see it again? The ref has to factor into it, somehow, because Batista should win but 'Taker can't lose clean. I think it'll be Stone Cold as the ref.

Matt Mackinder

The special ref won’t matter because Batista retains regardless. I've got Stone Cold as the man in the stripes and he stuns both Big Dave and ‘Taker after the match, does the beer bash, yadda, yadda, yadda. Yawn.

  ECW HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE MATCH

CM Punk vs. Big Daddy V OR John Morrison OR The Miz

SLAM! Predictions

Jon Waldman

You have to imagine that if BDV wins the vote he'll also get the belt, just so Vinnie Mac can have the four-way big man match be for the belt on Tuesday. To me, that's not necessarily a bad thing, as that would be the perfect way to give Kane another world title that he so richly deserves before he retires. I say this, though, knowing we'd sacrifice CM Punk's run, which really could have momentum if he'd be allowed to perform to his true abilities. I think fans will vote for Morrison and the two will have a great match, with Punk retaining.

Bob Kapur

I think people will pick Miz because they don't see him as a threat and fans don't want either of the other guys to hold the belt. Miz will be surprisingly good, but a BDV run-in will ensure that Punk retains.

Greg Oliver

For the love of God, it had better be John Morrison or this match will suck big time. Punk retains against whomever is thrown in. He hasn't exactly excelled as champ, but he hasn't failed either. Give him more time.

Matt Mackinder

If Big Fatty or Miz get the shot here, Lord help us. Punk and Morrison have had some decent matches and are pretty much all there is to see on Tuesday Night Velocity, so they go again here. The belt goes back to Nitro in a tainted finish (see the Orton comments above).

UNDERCARD

SLAM! Predictions

Jon Waldman
Umaga vs. Triple H (Steel Cage OR Street Fight OR First Blood)- The stip doesn't matter. Triple H wins handily. US Title - MVP vs. Matt Hardy (MMA OR Boxing OR Wrestling)- It's going to be MMA, which will be interesting. Maybe they still have the Lion's Den in storage somewhere. MVP wins. Rey Mysterio vs. Finlay (No DQ OR Shillelagh on a Pole OR Stretcher)- WWE needs more poles like a farmer needs more cowbell. Feh. Stretcher match, with Rey on the losing end. Diva Halloween Costume Contest- Am I really supposed to care here? Let's make this easy and say a new woman debuts here, potentially a steal from TNA.

Bob Kapur
Umaga vs. Triple H (Steel Cage OR Street Fight OR First Blood)- A steel cage is always a fun gimmick match, so that's my pick. HHH in a squash. US Title - MVP vs. Matt Hardy (MMA OR Boxing OR Wrestling)- Out of curiosity, I think fans will vote for an MMA match, which MVP will win. That would be my pick. Rey Mysterio vs. Finlay (No DQ OR Shillelagh on a Pole OR Stretcher)- Please, please, please, shillelaghs on a pole! Mysterio wins, getting revenge for last time. Diva Halloween Costume Contest- I love this strip-ulation. I win!

Greg Oliver
Umaga vs. Triple H (Steel Cage OR Street Fight OR First Blood)- Fans always hunger for a steel cage match, so I think it'll happen here. The King of Kings wins. US Title - MVP vs. Matt Hardy (MMA OR Boxing OR Wrestling)- It makes sense for it to be boxing, but I think it'll end up being an MMA match. A bad one as well. MVP wins. Rey Mysterio vs. Finlay (No DQ OR Shillelagh on a Pole OR Stretcher)- Given what happened at the last PPV, I see a stretcher match for this bout, with Mysterio prevailing. Diva Halloween Costume Contest- Winner? Lonely men everywhere, I guess.

Matt Mackinder
Umaga vs. Triple H (Steel Cage OR Street Fight OR First Blood)- Hunter with a nasty win inside the cage. Lots of juice, please. US Title - MVP vs. Matt Hardy (MMA OR Boxing OR Wrestling)- Just wrestle, please? And give Matt the U.S. strap. Rey Mysterio vs. Finlay (No DQ OR Shilleleagh on a Pole OR Stretcher)- Rey Rey – from World champ to this. Mysterio wins in a Shilelagh On A Pole match. Diva Halloween Costume Contest- I don’t know and don’t care. Beth Phoenix interrupts and destroys everyone to, uh, win?
