Smackdown: Batista spears The Dead Man
By ANDY McNAMARA - SLAM! Wrestling
With Cyber Sunday only two days away, every Superstar on the roster is on edge. A surprise pairing of Finlay and Mysterio put on a technical masterpiece against the tag champs Matt Hardy and MVP. ECW also invades the program with a Triple Threat Match as the three possible contenders for CM Punk’s title showcase their skills to the fans. Finally a one-on-one interview between The Undertaker and JBL gets out of hand and Batista pounces at the opportunity.
The program begins with a special four-man VIP Lounge with your host MVP. Finlay, Mysterio, Matt Hardy, and MVP are all in the ring discussing their respective possible matches at Cyber Sunday. Finlay and Mysterio bicker back and forth until Rey finally snaps after the Irishman kept pushing him. Matt Hardy proclaims that himself and MVP are the greatest dysfunctional tag team of all time. A main event type of match is made to pit Finlay and Mysterio vs. MVP and Hardy later on tonight.
Batista is interviewed backstage and the world heavyweight champ states again that he is not afraid of The Undertaker.
Match 1: Kane vs. Mark Henry
The Big Red Machine is favouring his ribs from attacks on ECW and last week’s Smackdown. Henry immediately targets the ribs, but Kane is able to connect with a dropkick while his opponent was seated. The World’s Strongest Man eventually sinks in a bear hug, which Kane is able to break free of after a couple of minutes with some kicks. Henry is able to block the first chokeslam attempt, however, Kane will not take no for an answer and nails the chokeslam for a victory.
Diva Search highlights are shown and it will be Michael Cole out to interview two of the finalists Brooke and Eve.
Match 2: MVP & Matt Hardy vs. Finlay & Rey Mysterio
Hardy and Finlay kick this one off and after some jostling the Irishman tags Mysterio in. The two exchange armbars before MVP slaps in and lands some heavy hands into the mid section of Rey. All four men are working crisply and the crowd seems to really be enjoying this technically sound war. Hardy tries to save MVP by catching Mysterio, however, Rey catches Matt with a hurricarana and busts him open on the head. Blood is gushing down Hardy’s face, but he still hits a near fall with the Side Effect,
Rey forces both competitors to lay on the middle rope and scores with the 619. Mysterio looks poised to finish off MVP with a springboard, but Finlay clocks Rey with a surprise shillelagh shot to the gut. This backstabbing allows MVP the opening he needs to connect with the Play Maker put away Mysterio
MVP & MVP & Matt Hardy
Match 3: Jamie Noble vs. Batista
Noble is in this mess because he attempted to hit on Vickie Guerrero back in her office. Vickie declines Noble’s offer and instead puts him against Batista. Noble is able to initially stay out of The Animal’s reach, however, he is caught with a spear soon enough. A spinebuster and Batista Bomb follows for the 1-2-3.
Match 4: ECW Triple Threat Match- Johnny Morrison vs. The Miz vs. Big Daddy V
If the appearance of an ECW star wasn’t bad enough last week, this time it is an actual match. Of course it is not an Extreme Rules contest, and the WWE does not even allow for the old ECW 3 Way Dance rules to be in effect. Morrison fakes that he will team with Miz, but then pushes him into Big Daddy V. Big Daddy is whipping around both men for the most part, eventually spilling the action to the outside and sets up his opponents against the steel ring post. V misses the running splash into him and his gross physique seems to ooze out from any angle. The big man gradually regains control with a swinging sideslam on Morrison, and then polishes off Miz courtesy of a powerbomb.
WINNER: Johnny Morrison
Match 5: Jesse & Festus vs. Jobber 1, 2
Essentially a squash. Festus pops his now stunned opponent on his shoulder and uses him to knock the first jobber off of the apron. Jesse is tagged in and delivers a tree of woe running drop kick. The finish comes as Jesse gets tossed off the top rope onto the two opponents down below by Festus.
WINNER: Jesse & Festus.
It is now time for JBL’s big interview with The Undertaker in regards to the Cyber Sunday PPV. Bradshaw is yammering on about his greatness when Taker’s music hits. JBL tries to pawn off his "Vote for JBL" shirts to be special guest referee for the world title bout between Undertaker and Batista. The Dead Man has heard enough so when Bradshaw starts to say that he is a "wrestling God" Taker delivers a chokeslam. Batista then hits the ring and spears The Undertaker! The program comes to a close with Batista standing on the entry ramp and Taker sitting up in the ring.
