Smackdown: Mysterio flies high in England
By ANDY McNAMARA - SLAM! Wrestling

Smackdown comes to you tonight from jolly old England. ECW begins their invasion of the program, much to the chagrin of Kane. Finlay has himself a busy night by putting on a technical showcase with Matt Hardy, and then continuing his quest to make Rey Mysterio’s life hell. Cyber Sunday is next week, and this evening’s show has a big impact on that pay-per-view! Grab a tea and crumpet because here comes the report!

Well, my worst fears have come true -- ECW has invaded Smackdown-- may God have mercy on us all!

Match 1: Kane vs. The Great Khali

Not many men can get a decent match out of The Great Khali -- and Kane is not one of them! The two behemoths lock up with Khali gaining the advantage with his three main offensive manoeuvres: a chop; a boot; and a vice grip to the shoulder. The Big Red Machine is able to fight his way out of the corner and eventually connect with the top rope clothesline. Khali blocks a chokeslam attempt, and clotheslines Kane to the outside. The DQ is called when Khali starts to choke Kane with a camera cord. Following the end of the match, Kane gets thrown into the ring steps; however, he is able to bounce back by smacking the giant with a ring bell. Kane is in the squared circle celebrating when he is sneak attacked by ECW’s Big Daddy V, and suffers the Ghetto Drop.

WINNER: Kane by DQ

Match 2: Chuck Palumbo w/ Michelle McCool vs. Chris Masters

Action goes back and forth until Masters starts yelling at Michelle while outside the ring. Palumbo makes him pay after a couple of blocked suplexes with a delayed suplex for a two count. Palumbo scores a flying shoulder tackle off the top, but all of a sudden Victoria runs down and blindsides Michelle. The distraction gives Masters an opening to roll up the biker for a quick three. Wasn’t Victoria with Kenny?

WINNER: Chris Masters

In the locker room MVP says to his tag team champion partner Matt Hardy that he wants to only focus on the tag belts and not their battle at Cyber Sunday. Hardy goes over the three fan choices of a boxing match, a wrestling match, or a mixed martial arts match, and tells MVP that he is looking forward to the pay-per-view.

Match 3: Matt Hardy vs. Finlay

Finlay tries to bully Hardy, but the tag title holder does not back down and shoves the Irishman. Finlay is so crisp, and pummels Matt before sinking in a modified half crab. After a few more hard clotheslines and stiff kicks, Hardy nails the bulldog for the deuce. A Side Effect cannot put away his opponent, and Finlay is able to escape from The Twist of Fate by shoving Hardy to the corner. The Irishman goes for the shillelagh, however, MVP (who just came to ringside) pulls it away, allowing Matt to hit The Twist of Fate for the victory. MVP yells out that he has Matt’s back.

WINNER: Matt Hardy

Match 4: Brian Major w/ Brett Major vs. Drew MacIntyre w/ Dave Taylor

Rumour has the MacIntyre/Taylor faction is where Harry Smith will start out on Smackdown. Major and MacIntyre exchange arm drags, with MacIntyre hitting a neckbreaker for a two. Crowd is not really digging this one. Taylor pesters Major, and makes him miss on a dive to the outside. Once both men are back in the ring MacIntyre is able to connect with a reverse Jeff Jarrett Stroke type move for the win.

WINNER: Drew MacIntyre

Next up is JBL’s interview with Batista. The announcer gets the British crowd hot by insulting them, and then tries to hype his vote as special referee for the Batista vs. Undertaker title bout at Cyber Sunday. Out comes The Animal who states that whomever the special ref is better just stay out of his way. JBL plugs Batista’s book, calls the world champ a coward, and gets speared for his troubles. Following the commercial break Bradshaw is back at the announce tables and tells Cole that he will ensure that Batista is not victorious.

Match 5: Deuce and Domino w/ Cherry vs. Jimmy Wang Yang & Shannon Moore

The high flying cruiserweights attack early with Yang attacking Domino to the outside and Moore knocking Deuce off the apron. Both teams are battling pretty evenly until Yang connects with an enziguri and a beautiful flip kick on Deuce. Domino tries to save his partner, however, Moore stops that idea by sending him through the ropes with a head scissors. Yang climbs high and hits probably the best moonsault in the business on Deuce for a 1-2-3.

WINNERS: Yang & Moore

Vickie Guerrero is in her office ordering Theodore Long a get well card from her cell phone. Jamie Noble comes in complaining about last week, but understands there’s a lot of pressure for someone in Guerrero’s position. A pretty funny bit as Noble pokes fun at her hormones. Vickie rewards him with a match against The Undertaker tonight!

Match 6: The Undertaker w/ Jamie Noble

Noble scurries around The Dead Man for a few seconds before getting caught with a chokeslam. Undertaker follows that up with a Tombstone, and this one is over.

WINNER: The Undertaker

Match 7: Main Event- Rey Mysterio vs. MVP

Mysterio works quickly gaining a near fall from a springboard splash, and narrowly missing with the 619. Rey has the United States champion on the run until a back drop into the ring, and a running boot sends Mysterio back outside. Following the commercials, MVP is in full control, but a botched big boot allows Rey to go to work on his opponent’s legs with some kicks. Mysterio is flying all around with a springboard crossbody and a senton for another two count. Second time is the charm for a 619, however, MVP catches him with a foot to the head when Rey tried for another senton splash. MVP sets up for the Play Maker when Finlay rushes down and pulls him out of the ring. This causes the DQ on Rey. Mysterio who then slams into MVP with a baseball slide before Finlay lays into Rey from behind. Mysterio bounces back, misses with a 619 to Finlay, and finishes off the show by connecting with a flying head scissors on the Irishman.

WINNER: MVP by DQ
