Lucha Libre excites in Motor City

DETROIT – In what has become a tradition, Lucha Libre wrestling came to Detroit wrestling. In a town filled with blue collar workers, came a group of men in masks. In a town familiar with the brutal and bloody style of The Sheik, came the high flying Ultimo Dragon.

IWR (Independent Wrestling Revolution), held their fourth ˇRevolucha! show on Sunday night at the Royal Oak Music Theater in suburban Detroit. The show drew a disappointing small crowd of under 100 fans. But those in attendance were were very familiar with the mix of local and international stars.

“It’s a bummer,” promoter Bubba Mackenzie told SLAM! Wrestling. “People just don’t know what they have in their backyard.”

The most anticipated match of the night came when 2 Cold Scorpio faced Ultimo Dragon in their first meeting. In what was seen throughout the night, the wrestlers wrestled full-force despite the crowd size.

The two shook hands and began the match feeling each other out. Scorpio, although 41, moved like it was 1995. He has not lost a step. Dragon, who was considered by many as one top wrestler in the world during the 1990s, used a mixture of kicks and leg locks to tear down the quick-moving Scorpio. Scorpio, who worked full-time in Japan for the better part of ten years, adopted to the Japanese style of Dragon well.

After ten minutes, Dragon gave 2 Cold Scorpio a reverse DDT. Scorpio failed to kickout, but the referee had botched the ending, only counting to two. The match was restarted, and Dragon won about a minute later.

The crowd gave the two a cheer as loud as a stadium filled WWE show. The crowd knew the two ring veterans had given them a good show, and they appreciated the effort.

“Amazing match,” fan Matt Welz told SLAM! Wrestling. “They didn’t have to work that hard for this size crowd.”

The show was taped for DVD to be distributed in the future by Big Vision Entertainment. IWR recently established a deal with Big Vision to have their ˇRevolucha! series distributed on DVD.

Other results from the show:

  • L.A. Park defeated CK3
  • N8 Mattson defeated Jerry Lynn
  • Bump n Uglies and C.J. Otis defeated The Scarboni Family and Johnny Dynamo
  • Gutter won a four-way over Jimmy Jacobs, Josh Abercrombie and Truth Martini
  • Nitro and Venum defeated Angel de Guerrero, Super Extremo and Cobra Kai

Find out more about the show, and the upcoming DVD on the IWR web site.
