Ailing Cena hip-hops off the chart
By TIM BAINES - Ottawa Sun

The sixth-longest heavyweight championship reign in WWE has come to a screeching halt.

John Cena, the former rapper, the guy who dishes out the five-knuckle shuffle, the FU and the STFU, suffered a torn pectoral muscle during his match with Mr. Kennedy on Monday Night RAW. Expected to be out of action for up to eight months, Cena will step aside with a title reign of a bit more than a year.

That puts him behind legends Bruno Sammartino (twice), Bob Backlund, Hulk Hogan and Pedro Morales. Cena had recently passed Macho Man Randy Savage to move into sixth on the list.

Cena has come a long way from being cast as The Prototype in Ohio Valley Wrestling, a WWE developmental territory, six years ago. Now 30, Cena was on his third heavyweight title reign.

As a "face," Cena still had heat with many fans, who chose to boo the champ. While his ring skills sometimes come into question, there's no doubt Cena has plenty of charisma and the "it" factor.

Now, WWE will have to come up with a new plan. Will Randy Orton be crowned the new champ at tomorrow night's No Mercy pay-per-view? Could it be Mr. Kennedy? Val Venis was the runaway leader in a wwe.com poll on who should be the next WWE champ. Orton was well down the list.

NO MERCY: Other matches tomorrow night: Batista vs. The Great Khali (Punjabi Prison match); CM Punk vs. Big Daddy V; Triple H vs. Umaga; Rey Mysterio vs. Finlay; MVP and Matt Hardy vs. The Undertaker & Kane; and Candice Michelle vs. Beth Phoenix. There have been rumours that Chris Jericho could return.

AROUND THE RING: Don't worry too much about John Cena Sr., whose head was recently punted by Orton. Senior is a wrestling promoter and part-time manager who goes by the moniker Johnny Fabulous. I'm guessing he's okay ... TNA star Kurt Angle was charged with drunken and careless driving last Friday near his Pittsburgh home. Police said Angle failed a field sobriety test before refusing a blood test. Angle's attorneys say their client is innocent and that the arrest was improper ... Danny Bonaduce scrapped with former Survivor goofball Jonny Fairplay (who was with TNA for a bit) at the FOX Reality awards. What's next, Rupert Boneham vs. Shirley Jones?
