Smackdown: Chavo screams "I Quit!"
By ANDY McNAMARA - SLAM! Wrestling
Tonight’s theme is one of revenge. A return "I Quit" match between Rey Mysterio and Chavo Guerrero from one year ago has classic written all over it. A Saturday Night’s Main Event return battle also takes place as Kane and Batista team against Finlay and The Great Khali. Matt Hardy, Chuck Palumbo, and Hornswaggle are also in action as Cincinnati, Ohio gets ready for another jam packed edition of Smackdown!
In MVP’s VIP lounge the new tag team champions bicker and Matt Hardy shows a clip of him punking MVP last week. Matt reiterates that it’s all good to be a tag title holder but he is still after MVP’s United States championship. MVP said that he has no interest in fighting his partner but as team captain did make a match for Hardy tonight with Deuce as a preview to tag title rematch at Unforgiven.
Match 1: Matt Hardy vs. Deuce w/ Domino & Cherry
MVP watches on laughing as Deuce pounds away on Hardy early on. Hardy finally gains some momentum following a second rope elbow and a near fall courtesy of a Side Effect. The crowd continues to be solidly behind Hardy. MVP assists Matt in picking up the victory and the stage is set for the big championship rematch at Unforgiven.
WINNER: Matt Hardy
Jamie Noble and Shannon Moore are in the back as Noble prepares a leprechaun trap for Hornswaggle. Their cruiserweight title tilt is up later tonight.
Match 2: Kenny Dykstra w/ Victoria vs. Chuck Palumbo w/ Michelle McCool
Oh ya, I forgot that Kenny Dykstra was still around. Dykstra comes out of the gate hot hitting a neck breaker and starts to work on his opponent’s left arm. Kenny is caught in mid air and slammed to the mat hard. Audience seems relatively flat, and I don’t see Palumbo’s run lasting too long. Victoria tried stealing Palumbo’s bike, but McCool is able to stop her. Shortly after Palumbo finishes off the young Dykstra with his modified spinning Canadian Backbreaker slam (High Octane).
WINER: Chuck Palumbo
Backstage we see GM Theodore Long give Krystal a CD and talk about their wedding.
Match 3: The Great Khali & Finlay vs. Kane & Batista
The two bitter rivals Finlay and Batista begin the match, and say what you want about Batista’s limitations but Finlay brings out the best in him. Things go back and forth before The Animal gains the advantage by delivering shoulder thrusts in the corner and then sending the Irishman into Khali courtesy of a Manhattan drop. Following the commercials Kane tags in and is working over Finlay, gaining a two count from a top rope neck drop. Khali finally gets tagged in and Kane’s right hands are doing nothing. A Finlay sneak attack DDT on the outside to The Big Red Machine allows Khali to continue the beatdown on Kane once he gets back into the ring. Kane attempts to escape from a Finlay reverse chin lock, however, the giant is tagged in to hit a boot and a shoulder claw hold. Kane slaps a hand around the world champion’s throat, Finlay runs in and is shoved away, and after Khali breaks free, Kane nails an ensiguri! The action sways back and forth when Finlay’s shillelagh attack is foiled by Batista pushing him aside. Batista and Kane double clothesline Khali out of the ring allowing The Big Red Machine to hit the chokeslam on Finlay for the pinfall.
WINNERS: Batista & Kane
In the back we see Hornswaggle following the trail of lucky charms that Jamie Noble laid out earlier, but when Noble pulls the rope to trap the leprechaun but the rope is not attached. The cruiserweight title is left under the trap and Noble goes to grab it but gets trapped underneath the box!
Match 4: Cruiserweight Championsip - Hornswaggle (c) vs. Jamie Noble
The champion pops out from under the ring and the referee begins to count Noble out since he is still trapped underneath the box! Wow the Cincinnati digs Hornswaggle. The challenger sprints down the aisle and cannot make it in before the count of ten. Hornswaggle throws out marbles in the ring without Noble knowing and when he slides in he slips and this allows the champ to escape.
WINNER: Hornswaggle via countout
Another Undertaker video is shown, but this time 'Taker is standing beside a hearse drawn by horses. The gong hits and a druid is in the ring. A nervous Mark Henry comes out and finally gets in the ring, grabs the druid ... but the lights go out. When they come back Henry is left holding only the druid’s cloak!
Match 5: Main Event - I Quit Match: Rey Mysterio vs. Chavo Guerrero
The feud has come full circle as this is how Chavo knocked Rey out of action last year. Guerrero comes out with a steel chair stating that the chair was part of Mysterio’s past and it is in his future, as he will destroy Rey again. Mysterio is working at a fever pitch nailing two head scissors, including one sending Guerrero out to the floor. Both former friends start duelling with chairs until Rey loses his and gets smacked in the ribs. Mysterio recovers and eventually huricaranas Chavo over the announcer’s table. These two are putting on the best main event on Smackdown that I’ve seen in some time. The chair that Chavo bashed Rey’s knee with last year is a focal point in the bout and Mysterio is able to hit a 619 while the chair was left by Guerrero’s head. After continuous efforts Chavo is at last able to smack the steel chair into Rey’s knee. Guerrero follows that by putting the chair around Rey Rey’s neck and whips him into the ring post. Mysterio refuses to give up when the mic is shoved in his face and Chavo does the same after he receives a top rope senton while being under a chair. Guerrero bashes Rey’s knee a bit more before going up top for a frog splash. Mysterio crotches his rival on the top rope and traps him in a tree of woe. Rey then unmercifully wails away on Chavo’s knee with the steel chair until he screams "I Quit." Terrific battle.
WINNER: Rey Mysterio
Soon after The Great Khali comes down, but Mysterio takes the attack to the big man first. A boot from the world heavyweight champion stops Rey cold, and a claw hold to the head squeezes blood from Mysterio’s lips. Batista rushes in for the save, however, a shot with the title belt to Khali does nothing. The Animal nails a spear next and this forces the champ to leave the ring. In the back GM Long runs into Khali and his translator and chastises the giant for his actions. As punishment Long adds Batista to the world title match at Unforgiven to make it Khali vs. Mysterio vs. Batista.
