Eugene released by WWE

World Wrestling Entertainment announced Saturday that it had released Nick Dinsmore, known to fans as Eugene.

"WWE has come to terms on the release of WWE Smackdown talent Eugene as of September 1. We wish Eugene the best in all future endeavors," read the release on the company's website.

Dinsmore had been the Eugene character since April 2004, when he was called up from Ohio Valley Wrestling. For many years, he was the mainstay of OVW, a talented performer who had not gotten the chance to move up to the main roster.

He was brought up to Raw as Eric Bischoff's simpleton nephew, and progressed through a series of storylines, but was never a top-of-card grappler.

Dinsmore was suspended for a drug infraction in Novermber 2005. Shortly after Taboo Tuesday, during the WWE's tour of England, Dinsmore was hospitalized and then suspended upon his return to the United States. He had been found passed out in a hotel lobby in Manchester, England, and later admitted to using a large dose of Somas, a prescription muscle relaxer and pain killer. He was sent to rehab for a two week period and disappeared from WWE television until he made his return at the Royal Rumble.
