Smackdown: Mysterio flies high
By ANDY McNAMARA -- SLAM! Wrestling
A huge show rushes into Albany, NY, this week. A mini #1 contender tournament for the world title will take place beginning with Finlay vs. Kane and Batista vs. Rey Mysterio. If that wasn't enough how about a tag team title contest featuring Deuce and Domino against the unlikely pairing of MVP and Matt Hardy? Throw in some more possible mothers of Vince McMahon's illegitimate child and you have another exciting edition of Smackdown!
The show kicks off with GM Theodore Long, The Great Khali and his translator in the ring for a World Heavyweight championship announcement. Long says that a "Championship Competition" will happen tonight with the winner facing Khali at Unforgiven for the world title. The winner of Finlay vs. Kane and Batista vs. Rey Mysterio will square off in a second match tonight to determine the #1 contender.
Match 1: Kane vs. Finlay
This SummerSlam rematch begins by Kane hurling the shillelagh up the entry ramp. Hornswaggle sneaks another shillelagh back in the corner when no one was looking. The Big Red Machine focuses on the left arm of Finlay with a variety of submissions and a smack into the ring post. The Irishman turns the tide in his favour by running Kane's injured ribs into the ring steps and the veteran targets the wounded area. Kane connects with a chokeslam and a big boot, but before he can capitalize Hornswaggle rushes in to distract the big man. Finlay seizes the moment and strikes Kane on the head with the shillelagh and picks up the win to advance.
WINNER: Finlay -- advances to face winner of Batista vs. Mysterio later tonight
Match 2: Tag Team Championship- Deuce & Domino w/ Cherry (c) vs. MVP & Matt Hardy
The two unlikely partners are forced together after being jumped last week by Deuce and Domino. This title bout gets started quickly with all four men brawling in and out of the ring. Hardy was about to set up Deuce for the Twist of Fate, but MVP blind tags himself in, and the partners continue to bicker. Coming back from the commercial break has Hardy isolated in the corner of the tag champs, with MVP showing no interest in helping. Matt finally catches a second wind and nails a Side Effect on Domino, and slaps MVP in the face as a tag. Hardy turns around and hits the Twist of Fate on Domino, however, MVP throws Matt from the ring and rolls up Domino for the 1-2-3. New tag team champions…Matt Hardy and MVP.
WINNERS: MVP & Matt Hardy
Batista walks into Vince's office and McMahon suggests that since Batista was born in Washington D.C. and Vince started his career in Washington ... could The Animal be his son? Batista goes over how dirt poor he was growing up and that if McMahon was his dad that he would beat him down for not contributing to him and his mom.
Match 3: Mark Henry vs. Eugene
I don't think this one actually started as Henry just whipped Eugene around like a rag doll in the bear hug. The World's Strongest Man whips the limp body to the outside and then does yet another Undertaker run down promo. The gong plays and the very cool Taker return video plays, ending with the Dead Man's hand breaking out of the ground. Henry stands in the ring stunned.
Match 4: Batista vs. Rey Mysterio
The second of the two semi-finals for the #1 contender spot is underway with the two friends shaking hands and hugging. Batista is too strong for Rey early on and Mysterio cannot seem to get him down. The Animal seems hesitant to hurt Rey, but the quick Mysterio makes him pay with a baseball slide on the outside. Mysterio runs into a boot while Batista is stuck in a corner allowing The Animal to attempt a Batista Bomb. Rey grabs hold of the top rope to stop the finisher and soon after nails a seated springboard senton for a near fall. Batista catches Mysterio during the 619 and connects with a nasty spinebuster. Batista cringes each time he hits Rey. Finlay runs with a chair and The Animal rips it away from him. Batista refuses to give the chair up as he goes after Finlay, shoves the referee who then disqualifies the big man. Mysterio advances to the finals versus Finlay.
WINNER: Rey Mysterio by DQ
Vince and Coach come out to the ring to take a look at some more possible mothers of McMahon's illegitimate child. Six total women come out ranging from a night following a show at Madison Square Garden in 1983 to a foursome Vince had on New Year's Eve 1977. Nothing notable comes out of this and the hunt for the boss's kid goes on.
Chris Masters and Chuck Palumbo are set to square off in a Masterlock Challenge. Palumbo sits down in the chair, but Masters attacks him from behind right away. Palumbo is able to battle back and toss Chris from the ring.
Backstage Jamie Noble and Shannon Moore are discussing the possibility of Noble attacking the Cruiserweight champ Hornswaggle during Finlay's match up. Noble suggests that Hornswaggle will be expecting an ambush and that he will take him down in their title fight next week. Moore slips a "I love Leprechauns" sign on Noble's back.
Match 5: Main Event -- #1 Contender's Match- Finlay vs. Rey Mysterio
This should be a solid performance from two of the best workers on Smackdown. Both men target a different body part: Finlay has Rey's back; and Mysterio goes after Finlay's leg. A modified tornado DDT scores a two count on the Irishman, however, Finlay counters with a close range clothesline for a near fall of his own. Rey sends Finlay over the top rope and then the trusty sidekick, Hornswaggle, trips him up from under the ring. Following the commercials, Finlay has a camel clutch sunk in and follows that up by continuing to work over Mysterio's back. Rey escapes from a half crab with a roll up two count. Mysterio is able to connect with a 619 to the back of Finlay's head and follows that with a spring board roll up for the win. Your #1 contender for the world title is Rey Mysterio! An entertaining and well executed match. The World Heavyweight champion The Great Khali comes down and stands toe to toe with Mysterio. Khali shoves Mysterio down and Batista quickly rushes in for the save. The Animal gets Khali to hang over the middle rope allowing for a Rey 619, and Batista follows that up with a spear to end the show.
WINNER: Rey Mysterio
