ECW: Punk earns yet another shot
By MATT MACKINDER - SLAM! Wrestling

SummerSlam is in the books and if you blinked, you missed the ECW title match. The champ John Morrison will no doubt gloat tonight about his win over CM Punk last Sunday, so let's see if there is any doubt.

After another new intro song, live from Albany, N.Y., Morrison hits the ring and rambles on and on with his cutesy words and names for himself. He introduces the participants in tonight's main event - a Fatal Four Way bout involving Punk, The Miz, The Boogeyman and Big Daddy V. And yes, the winner gets an ECW title match. Yawn. Only one (Punk) is title-worthy. Miz? Come on. Where is Elijah Burke? Still no Marcus Cor Von? Stevie Richards? Nope, we get to see Big Fatty tonight. Again. Get the barf bags ready.

Match # 1 - Stevie Richards vs. Kevin Thorn

Maybe this feud has legs after all. For those keeping track, this is Match No. 4 in the series and Stevie is 3-0 with two pins and a reverse decision victory.

Thorn thoroughly dominates this match, targeting Stevie's neck and eventually gets the win with the Original Sin, or as a buddy of mine calls it, the Extreme Stunner.

Winner via pinfall: Kevin Thorn

A Boogeyman video package is shown, basically making him look like a freak. Oh wait, that was the point. Nevermind.

The Miz and Extreme Exposé bump into Balls Mahoney backstage. All but Kelly Kelly calls him a loser. Miz wants Balls to face Burke tonight to see if last week was a fluke.

Backstage, ECW GM Armando Estrada is with Morrison when Punk comes in and starts chomping on Estrada's spread. Morrison gets in Punk's face and Punk replies by commenting on the taste of the cantaloupe. Punk's been getting a sense of hunor lately and I like it. He and Morrison are about all that is worth watching on Tuesday nights. So what happens when their feud culminates? Uh-oh.

Match # 2 - Elijah Burke vs. Balls Mahoney

Miz, his fedora and the girls watch the match from ringside. Kelly cheers Mahoney and I think we all know where this is going, don't we?

The match goes back and forth and isn't half-bad. Mahoney nails the Nutcracker Suite, but Burke gets to the ropes. Burke hits a superplex and Balls rolls halfway across the ring to a corner. The knee pads come down, Burke charges, and one Elijah Express later gets Burke the win.

Winner via pinfall: Elijah Burke

After Justin Roberts announces Burke the winner, Miz takes the mic and announces Balls as the loser. Kelly stays behind to check on Balls and Miz, Brooke and Layla don't know why. I don't know why either.

Match # 3 - Fatal Four Way to determine No. 1 contender - CM Punk vs. The Miz vs. The Boogeyman vs. Big Daddy V w/ Matt Striker

Big Fatty is all Tazz and Joey Styles talk about. They also make mention that both Fatty and Miz are undefeated since coming to ECW. Wow. Impressive. They've beaten jobbers. Whoopty-doo!

The match has some OK action, I'll admit. Nothing special, though.

Boogey and Mabel take the match to the floor and we get a nice exchange with Punk and Miz. A GTS out of nowhere gives Punk the win and yet one more shot at Morrison.

Winner via pinfall and No. 1 contender: CM Punk

Big Fatty slams Boogey on the floor and Punk celebrates with the fans. As Punk heads up the aisle, Fatty and Teach stare him down as we get a hint of the next big feud in ECW. But will it be a feud for the ECW belt?

'Til next week...

MACKER'S MAILBAG

I meant to ask if you had any thoughts on Viscera defeating Punk (two weeks ago)? That made absolutely no sense to me at all. And especially after seeing Punk, as you described, carrying that main event last week (August 21). The match was good overall, but Punk was great. He had a short sequence near the end that was reminiscent of HBK's early days.

Sigh

I miss WCW...I miss the Cruiserweight tag division...I miss hardcore wrestling...I miss good I-C title feuds.

Sigh

There was a time where the I-C title MEANT something and great, long feuds were built around that title - Savage/Steamboat...Shawn/Razor...HHH/Rock...Jericho/Benoit...

There used to be guys that held that title proudly, but gone are those days because Vince is an idiot.

Sigh

Ive had more than enough of McMahon constantly putting himself on TV. People in all the arenas should start chants every time he gets in front of them of We Dont Care or Its Not About You. Its not enough that he has made barrels of money off of the talent, but he has to outshine them for his own ego as well.

Happy second birthday to Matt and Stephanie's son, Ethan, today! He'll get a belated birthday present in a month in the form of a new baby brother!
