Steroids ... scary stuff: Poffo
By TIM BAINES - Ottawa Sun
It was 1989 and Lanny Poffo was changing his World Wrestling Federation gimmick from Leaping Lanny Poffo to The Genius.
"I decided I had to go in with a bang," says Poffo over the phone earlier this week. "So I took (steroids) ... for two months. Nobody held a gun to my head and told me I had to do them. But just about everybody was doing them.
"I don't want to throw anybody under the bus except myself. I want people to know this is scary. I developed acne and testicular atrophy. I'm glad I had the side effects or I would have been living in a fool's paradise."
"It's too easy to blame steroids," says Poffo. "I blame Benoit. Could the steroids have had an effect? Possibly.
"Was Benoit on steroids? I could tell by looking at him."
So what about too many wrestlers dying too young, a list that expanded on Wednesday when former ECW tag champ John Kronus left us?
"I am not surprised at the list of wrestlers that have died," says Poffo.
"What I am surprised at is the list isn't bigger. I'm not sure how Jake 'The Snake' Roberts is still alive. He's younger than me and he looks like he could be my father.
"It's the party scene that will kill you. You can be at the top of the world, then you hit bottom."
Poffo, born in Calgary while his dad Angelo was working for Stu Hart, has affection for this country.
"I love Canada," says Poffo, whose family settled in Chicago. "I feel Canadian at heart."
He will return to Canada on Aug. 23 for SuperEx Showdown: When Legends Collide at the Civic Centre in Ottawa. He's part of a huge show that includes a speech from Bret Hart, along with stars like A.J. Styles, Christian Cage, Abdullah the Butcher and Jeff Jarrett.
Poffo has also won an award for a children's anti-smoking book called Limericks for the Heart (and Lungs). Check out www.lannypoffo.com for more details.
GREAT AMERICAN BASH: A pectoral injury to Edge forced him to forfeit his title on Smackdown! ... and the new champ is The Great Khali, who will face Kane and Batista at The Great American Bash pay-per-view tomorrow night.
