Countdown to One Night Stand
By SLAM! Wrestling Staff

What is this, TNA? Every match on the WWE pay-per-view One Night Stand is a gimmick match.

Take your pick -- we've got tables, stretchers, ladders, pudding, lumberjacks, street fights, a cage ... Will it make for an interesting night? Of course. Will it make for anything resembling Flair vs Steamboat in a 60-minute draw? Of course not.

With all that in mind, the brave folks at SLAM! Wrestling decided to let loose with their predictions. Let's see what they had to say:

MAIN EVENT: WWE HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP PINFALLS COUNT ANYWHERE MATCH

John Cena vs. Great Khali

SLAM! Predictions

Brian Elliott
Despite a better-than-expected showing at Judgment Day, The Great Khali still does not belong in the main event of any wrestling pay-per-view. All of the effort in that match can be attributed to John Cena, and he'll have to work just as hard again to make this one work, even with the no-DQ stipulations. Cena to win via pinfall.

John Powell
What did we do to deserve this? Man, have things gone downhill since WrestleMania or what? A great way to ressurect Cena’s image though by pitting him against someone the fans hate even more. What’s next? Cena versus Eugene? Cena versus Boogeyman? Cena versus Daivari? Good gracious. The Champ beats Khali…again. Winner: John Cena.

Jon Waldman
For those who remember my rant a few weeks back, now you see why I decried Cena lifting Khali up in prep for an FU. WWE could've used the last two Raws to illustrate that Cena could not lift the big man. Instead, what we'll get now is a very watered-down moment. Yes, Cena will win with the FU, but I half expect there to be a table involved or a stack o' chairs.

Bob Kapur
Their last PPV match wasn't bad, and the SNME squash did its job in making Khali look indestructible. Through it all, Cena hasn't been able to hit the FU, so look for that to be the payoff spot in this one. Cena wins cleanly to finish the feud.

Matt Mackinder
Of course Cena wins -- he’s Superman and Hulk Hogan all rolled into one. Khali is a zero talent who now looks like Mario Mancini after tapping to the STFU at Judgment Day. Now he gets pinned, probably not in the ring, though.

Andy McNamara
Having seen Khali win clean at Saturday Night's Main Event there is no doubt that Cena plays the giant killer and pins Khali outside the ring.

WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE CAGE MATCH

Edge vs. Batista

SLAM! Predictions

Brian Elliott
This contest is much more intriguing politically than it is from any kind of storyline aspect. Batista is coming off several high-profile losses to The Undertaker and Edge, and needs to regain momentum. Edge, however, is a markedly better performer, who should be booked as the strongest player on Smackdown. Although it goes against all booking sensibilities, Batista will take this one.

John Powell
I wouldn’t make much sense to strip Edge of the title just when he was picking up momentum on Smackdown! There are many more possibilities if Edge retains. Batista is on his way back to Raw anyways. An Edge versus Benoit feud throughout the summer would rock. I can see clearly now. Winner: Edge.

Jon Waldman
Remind me, what has Batista done to deserve another shot? He hasn't been able to grab the brass ring in his bouts with 'Taker, and straight-out lost last time 'round to Edge. Time for new blood here, which I'm guessing will come as a result of the draft. For now though, Edge wins.

Bob Kapur
The brand split is what makes this one interesting. If Benoit stays on Smackdown, there's a good chance he would contend for Edge's belt. If not, then it's a scramble. I think it's way too soon for Edge to drop the championship, but something tells me that's where they're going to go.

Matt Mackinder
Edge is destined for a long run, so he keeps the strap in this match. Batista is just big and boring to watch. Expect major juice and expect Edge to sell. Edge will make this match and will carry Big Dave.

Andy McNamara
Edge is doing such an awesome job as the heel champion and Batista's intensity is still lacking. My pick is Edge, and I really hope they give him a good run.

  ECW TITLE STREET FIGHT MATCH

Bobby Lashley vs.Vince McMahon

SLAM! Predictions

Brian Elliott
I admire his enthusiasm, but Vince McMahon wrestling is an excellent reason not to buy this pay-per-view. Coupled with the no-DQ stipulation, we are guaranteed the same McMahon match we have all seen for years, which is impressive for a man of his age, but little else. Lashley needs to be booked with an opponent whom he can learn from, so I predict that he takes the title, and moves onto a new feud.

John Powell
It wasn’t bad enough that the WWE has managed to strip ECW of everything that made it great. Now, Vinnie Mac is da champ. It is enough to make you drag a cheese grater across your own forehead. Here's hoping Lashley wins back the title and this recycled Austin versus McMahon storyline is finally put to bed. The whole angle sucks. Enuff already. Winner: Bobby Lashley.

Jon Waldman
We know Lashley's going over here. If he doesn't, it's the clearest indication that ECW is indeed dead and WWE has given up on the big man. Expect interaction from Umaga, Shane and a few others here.

Bob Kapur
Paul Heyman must be sitting at home crying while this ECW farce continues... Lord knows I am. Lashley gets back the belt, hopefully ending this angle for good. Up next for the ECW champ: Khali?

Matt Mackinder
Pains me to say this, but somehow Vince keeps the ECW title and keeps his title as top heel in his own company. This whole angle is pathetic. Why can’t this be a Taipei Death Match and get Axl and Ian Rotten involved on Lashley’s side?

Andy McNamara
This has to be Lashley's time for revenge. The big man has been screwed over time and time and tonight Bobby regains the title.

SLAM! Predictions

Brian Elliott
Hardys vs. Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin (Ladder Match): Here's hoping that Haas & Benjamin still have it, because this has the potential to be a great match if they do. Hardys to triumph.
Melina vs. Candice Michelle (Pudding Match): Melina shows some aptitude for the wrestling business. Michelle, sadly, does not. Melina to win.
C.M. Punk & Sandman & Tommy Dreamer vs. Elijah Burke & Marcus Cor Von & Matt Striker (Tables Match): The ECW Originals need to move on as quickly as possible, because I can't see a place for them in an ECW which seems to be based on building for the future (Lashley, Punk, Burke, Cor Von). But since this is Extreme Rules, I'm sure that the Punk/Sandman/Dreamer combination will come out on top.
Kane vs. Mark Henry (Lumberjack Match) Unless either combatant pulls out something spectacular (and they won't), this match will not be worth one tenth of any match involving Chris Benoit, the man whom they are replacing on the card. Henry wins, and with any luck, quickly.
Randy Orton vs. Rob Van Dam (Stretcher Match) Given his expiring contract, and the Stretcher Match stipulation, RVD should be the one leaving the ring horizontally. Perhaps the next place he will be seen is in TNA.

John Powell
Hardys vs. Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin (Ladder Match): Buckle up tight! This will be the best match of the evening with many "Holy crap!" moments to be sure. The Hardys live to fight another day. Winners: The Hardys.
Melina vs. Candice Michelle (Pudding Match): They will be rolling around in pudding. I repeat, they will be rolling around in pudding. We are all winners so the outcome matters little. Winner: Melina.
C.M. Punk & Sandman & Tommy Dreamer vs. Elijah Burke & Marcus Cor Von & Matt Striker (Tables Match): Although the new ECW completely blows, the show still has a lot of amazing talent. Good to see some of it on display here. It makes sense that the standout talent is probably moving on to Raw or Smackdown! so it is probably best to wrap up the whole New Breed deal with a mutiny against Burke. Winners: C.M. Punk & Sandman & Tommy Dreamer.

Jon Waldman
Hardys vs. Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin (Ladder Match): Match of the night going in, match of the night going out. WGTT gets the "surprise" win.
Melina vs. Candice Michelle (Pudding Match): Just when the Women's matches were getting back up to Trish-level interest, we get this. I don't care.
C.M. Punk & Sandman & Tommy Dreamer vs. Elijah Burke & Marcus Cor Von & Matt Striker (Tables Match): The old standby - when all else fails, use tables. I'm guessing Punk will be the last on his side and then run the gauntlet.
Kane vs. Mark Henry (Lumberjack Match) A throw-together match that could be the start of Kane's much-rumoured road to retirement. Henry needs the win.
Randy Orton vs. Rob Van Dam (Stretcher Match) RVD's last bout will be reminiscent of one of his most famous in ECW. Sleeper match here, with RKO going over.

Bob Kapur
Hardys vs. Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin (Ladder Match): Look for Cade & Murdoch to get involved here - but to whose advantage? Hardys win.
Melina vs. Candice Michelle (Pudding Match): Women and pudding? Greatest thing ever. Me and all the horndogs win. And Candice.
C.M. Punk & Sandman & Tommy Dreamer vs. Elijah Burke & Marcus Cor Von & Matt Striker (Tables Match): Gotta go with the sentimental favourites in Tommy and Sandman -- with Punk getting the win over Burke.
Kane vs. Mark Henry (Lumberjack Match) Unless the Divas come out as Lumber-JILLS, I have no interest in this one. Henry wins.
Randy Orton vs. Rob Van Dam (Stretcher Match) RVD appears to be leaving, so he does the job on his way out.

Matt Mackinder
Hardys vs. Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin (Ladder Match): Haas and Benjamin as champs? Ha! Hardys retain handily.
Melina vs. Candice Michelle (Pudding Match): Do we care? Pudding? Candice wins I guess.
C.M. Punk & Sandman & Tommy Dreamer vs. Elijah Burke & Marcus Cor Von & Matt Striker (Tables Match): Punk picks up the win for his team, but refuses to be on the Originals’ side.
Kane vs. Mark Henry (Lumberjack Match) Mark Henry on a PPV -- a cryin' shame. Even worse is he wins.
Randy Orton vs. Rob Van Dam (Stretcher Match) Is Van Dam leaving or not? Vince throws us a curve and has RVD get the victory here.

Andy McNamara
Hardys vs. Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin (Ladder Match): This will be match of the night, but in the end the more experienced Hardys retain the belts.
Melina vs. Candice Michelle (Pudding Match): Since it's non-title give the nod to Michelle.
C.M. Punk & Sandman & Tommy Dreamer vs. Elijah Burke & Marcus Cor Von & Matt Striker (Tables Match): Wow an ECW match on an ECW PPV. I think for nostalgia's sake Punk, Sandman & Dreamer take it.
Kane vs. Mark Henry (Lumberjack Match) As we saw from Smackdown this week this will be a plodding affair. They're building up Henry so he'll take it with the powerslam.
Randy Orton vs. Rob Van Dam (Stretcher Match) Well since RVD is on his way out we know Orton will win. RVD will get seriously injured and we'll never see him again.
