Smackdown: The Animal cuts down Edge
By ANDY McNAMARA - SLAM! Wrestling

A big weekend for wrestling ahead of us as tonight sets up Saturday Night’s Main Event and One Night Stand. Fans are treated to the first Smackdown edition of "The Cutting Edge" as Edge hosts his nemesis Batista. The show begins and ends with solid tag team wrestling including a triple threat tag championship rumble. Sprinkle on a hilarious minis match we're ready to rock with Smackdown!

Match 1: MVP & The Miz vs. Chris Benoit & Matt Hardy

A solid opening bout with the London, Ontario crowd naturally popping big for every Benoit manoeuvre. Miz continues his aggressive streak -- it still looks strange seeing him putting a beat down on the Rabid Wolverine. A crisp snap suplex allows Benoit to escape to Hardy who is able to connect with an innovative corner powerbomb and Side Effect. Following the commercial break it doesn’t take long for the heels to isolate Hardy. Eventually he makes the hot tag to Benoit who takes charge and is able to force The Miz to tap out to the Crossface.

WINNERS: Benoit & Hardy

Finlay is in the back with Hornswaggle and he is getting the mini Irishman ready for his match against Little Boogey Man later on this evening.

Match 2: Michelle McCool vs. Jillian Hall

An overall sloppy bout with both ladies trading the advantage. As Jillian is in control Ashley comes down and distracts the diva allowing McCool to rebound. Michelle finishes off her foe with a spinning side slam.

WINNER: Michelle McCool

Boogeyman tries to pump up his tiny mirror image by giving him worms to eat.

Match 3: Hornswaggle vs. Little Boogey Man

A fun little match and Hornswaggle gets his hat filled with worms as soon as the bell rings! Finlay doesn’t accompany Hornswaggle to the ring. The leprechaun sprays green mist into the eyes of Little Boogey. Big Boogey Man goes after Hornswaggle and while the distraction occurs Finlay (who popped out from under the squared circle) clocks Little Boogey with a shillelagh. The tiny Irishman takes advantage by connecting a flying crossbody and getting the three count.

WINNER: Hornswaggle

Match 4: Mark Henry vs. Kane

A classic this will not be and after the general plodding/clubbing routines the two monsters find themselves on the outside. Henry is able to drop out of the way from a chokeslam attempt, but Kane drop kicks him through the bottom rope. The World’s Strongest Man slaps on a big bear hug and runs Kane into the steel ringpost. This immobilized The Big Red Machine allowing for Henry to climb back in for the countout victory. At One Night Stand this pair will square off in a lumberjack match and will hopefully look a bit smoother than the battle that just occurred.

WINNER: Mark Henry

The tag champs Deuce, Domino, and Cherry are interviewed about their thoughts on the upcoming tri-brand draft.

Match 5: Main Event- Tag Team Championships: Deuce & Domino (c) w/ Cherry vs. Paul London & Brian Kendrick vs. William Regal & Dave Taylor

We will see how the rookie tag champs hang with a couple of solid veteran teams. Regal lets fists of fury fly on Domino and then it is the London/Kendrick combination who take over. For the majority of the match Kendrick was being isolated by the two heel factions, until he finally made the hot tag to London. The speedy London cleans house with his usual impressive array of aerial attacks and looks be ready to put away Domino when he climbs to the top. The pesky Cherry rushes up and pushes London off allowing Domino to roll him up quickly to retain the gold.

WINNERS: Deuce & Domino

In the back offices GM Theodore Long congratulates new Assistant GM, Vickie Guerrero, on her idea to make the Kane vs. Mark Henry Lumberjack Match at the One Night Stand PPV this Sunday. Following Kristal’s concern that her and Long might be broken up because of the upcoming draft the GM said he would give up his job for her. Vickie tells them to go have a romantic evening as she has everything under control.

It is now time for the first edition of The Cutting Edge on Smackdown. The World Heavyweight champion interviewed his One Night Stand opponent and reiterated that he is not intimidated by Batista. The two got in each other’s faces with some shoving and sarcasm. Finally Batista had had enough and clocked Edge with a right hand to end the program.
