Smackdown: The Animal rises again
By ANDY McNAMARA - SLAM! Wrestling
There is no time to rest from Judgment Day as the One Night Stand pay-per-view is only nine days away. A number one contender World championship Fatal-Four-Way bout will take centre stage tonight. Also, MVP has his official U.S. title victory celebration; however, the new champ's cockiness lands him into some immediate trouble. Des Moines, Iowa is ready for a packed wrestling card -- are you? Here comes Smackdown!
The program begins with the World Heavyweight champion Edge coming down to the ring. Edge recaps how he won the title and that he was an opportunist who took advantage of an injured Undertaker. GM Theodore Long interrupts the champ’s self-glorifying speech to tell him that at One Night Stand he will be defending his title against the winner of tonight’s Fatal-Four-Way main event. Not only that but the match at the pay-per-view will take place inside a steel cage!
Match 1: Paul London & Brian Kendrick vs. William Regal & Dave Taylor
The tag team champions Deuce, Domino, and Cherry are watching the match ringside from their red convertible. London throws the veteran Regal off his game with a stalling monkey flip, however, Kendrick continues the momentum as Taylor is dropkicked over the top rope. Kendrick’s knee is injured when Taylor hurls him high over the top and to the outside. From there the heel team isolate the high flyer, work over his knee, until he finally makes the hot tag to London. London climbs to the top turnbuckle when Domino rushes up and pushes him off causing the DQ. Dave Taylor is not too happy about being cost the matchup and attacks Domino. Before you know it all three teams are pounding away on one another.
WINNERS: London & Kendrick by DQ
Backstage we see Hornswaggle running around with Edge’s title belt. As the champion gives chase they run into Finlay who hands back the belt and informs Edge that he can keep his World championship -- for now.
Out next is Jillian Hall complete with a hands free headset -- I think we might be in for a song. Sadly we are and it is Jill-a-tonic, which of course sounds terrible. Luckily The Boogey Man’s music hits and Boogey sneaks up from beneath the ring. Jillian escapes, however, Michelle McCool runs down and throws her back in. Little Boogey prevents her from leaving and Hall gets worms dropped on her head.
In GM Long’s office Theodore gives Vickie Guerrero the Assistant GM position; hopefully this will work out for her.
Match 2: Matt Hardy vs. The Miz
Hardy continues his double show duty and is in full control with a variety of arm locks. A middle rope sling shot gives the rookie the advantage and scores a near fall following a side Russian leg sweep. Miz has improved by leaps and bounds recently and has been in the driver seat for the majority of this match. Matt explodes with a clothesline to bounce back nailing a running bulldog and second rope elbow drop. Following a few reversals Hardy finally connects with a modified Twist of Fate to pick up the three count.
WINNER: Matt Hardy
MVP’s United States championship celebration is up now as the new champ is driven out in a white convertible. He makes a speech about how he told everyone when he signed his contract that he would deliver. MVP calls out Chris Benoit to celebrate with him since he was the one defeated. He says Benoit should shake his hand, and the former U.S. champ obliges. MVP now wants The Crippler to raise his hand and admit that Benoit is the past. The champ gets in his face and feels the bite of The Rabid Wolverine with a couple of German suplexes.
Match 3: Non-title Cruiserweight Championship- Chavo Guerrero (c) vs. Jimmy Wang Yang
The Asian redneck grounds Chavo with various submissions, which is in contrast to his usual high flying acrobatics. Guerrero takes control following a tremendously high dropkick to Yang’s knee while the cowboy was on the top rope. Chavo gets ready for frog splash when Yang jumps up with an impressive jump kick to the head. A roll through by Guerrero to get out of a superplex attempt is reversed by Jimmy for the victory.
WINNER: Jimmy Wang Yang
Match 4: Main Event- Fatal-Four-Way: Batista vs. Kane vs. Finlay vs. Mark Henry
Following a lengthy stare down the four men pair off: Batista attacking Henry, and Kane dominating Finlay. The Animal goes right after Edge on the outside, but the distraction costs him as Mark Henry pounces from behind. Coming out of the commercial break Finlay has turned his fortunes around as he hones in on Kane’s chokeslam hand by slamming it off the steps. Surprisingly both heels and the two babyfaces begin to pound away on each other, however, this doesn’t last long as Batista gets a near fall on Henry from a lunging clothesline. Out of desperation Finlay clocks both Henry and Batista with the shillelagh and is about to pin one of the fallen warriors before Kane pulls the Irishman outside. Bodies are flying everywhere until Batista delivers the Batista Bomb on Finlay for the win and the number one contendership for the title at One Night Stand.
