Old Vince is the cure for ECW
By TIM BAINES - Ottawa Sun

The chants are ringing. E-C-Dub ... E-C-Dub ...

And Joey Styles is bellowing: "Oh, my God!"

And The Genetic Jackhammer, Vince McMahon, black do-rag covering the hairbuzz carnage from WrestleMania, is standing in the centre of the ring with the ECW championship raised.

Uh, one of these things is not like the others. One of these things just doesn't belong.

But at risk of losing my lifetime ECW membership card, a crinkled piece of cardboard with a fading photo of Paul Heyman, I'm going to suggest that giving Vinny Mac the ECW championship is one of the few good things WWE has done since it took the ECW franchise and slowly began plunging down the toilet.

Yep, Vinny is gold.

As far as hardcore wrestling goes, McMahon can't stand in the boots of legends such as Terry Funk, The Sandman, Jerry Lynn, Tommy Dreamer, Rob Van Dam, Mike Awesome, Shane Douglas, Masato Tanaka, Raven, or even Mikey Whipwreck and Justin Credible.

But McMahon has selling power. He has heel heat like few others. McMahon will generate a lot more interest in the title than the guy he beat for the belt, Bobby Lashley (who lost the title at Sunday's Backlash in a handicap match against McMahon, son Shane, and Umaga). Fans will tune in to watch McMahon get the living bejeezus beat out of him. That's good for ratings. And it's good for ECW ... as sacrilegious as that sounds.

CHAMP IS HERE: McMahon has the ECW belt, John Cena has the WWE title and The Undertaker has the world championship. The landscape will change and there will, in all likelihood, be three new champs. You've gotta think Triple H will have his eyes on Cena's belt when he returns. CM Punk is destined to win the ECW title. And Mr. Kennedy will wear gold, although not likely until next WrestleMania.

AROUND THE RING: Other BACKLASH pay-per-view results: The Hardy Boyz beat Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch; Melina beat Mickie James; Chris Benoit beat MVP; The Undertaker and Batista fought to a double countout in a Last Man Standing Match; and John Cena won a Fatal 4-Way over Edge, Randy Orton and Michaels ... The Undertaker, with a torn biceps, could lose the belt next week against Batista on Smackdown! If he's going to be out awhile, you've gotta think The Deadman will suffer a beatdown ... Several sources say Rob Van Dam will leave WWE when his contract expires next month.
