ECW: New Breed tension?
By MATT MACKINDER - SLAM! Wrestling
Do Italians love ECW? We'll find out as tonight's show from Milan continues the ECW Originals-New Breed soap opera.
The New Breed, sans CM Punk is in the ring and Elijah Burke has the mic. He introduces Punk, who comes down to both cheers and boos. Punk says he wants to keep to himself the reasons why he joined the New Breed and spurned the Originals, but says the reason is obvious. Rob Van Dam appears at the top of the stage and says he and the Originals will make Punk live to regret his decision. He then challenges Burke to a match tonight, but Burke hesitates. Punk grabs the mic, says he is the leader of the New Breed, only to have an upset and confused Burke grab back the mic and accept RVD’s challenge.
Match # 1 – Nunzio vs. Snitsky
I guess Little Guido is back to being called Nunzio. He receives a huge pop from the crowd, mounts some offense against Gene, but goes down to a big boot to the chest.
Winner via pinfall: Snitsky
Burke and Punk are in the back and Punk thinks Burke is scared of RVD. Burke denies it and then tells Punk to fall in line.
Apparently, there’s some new movie coming out with Steve Austin in it? Were you aware of this???
Match # 2 – The Sandman & Tommy Dreamer vs. Marcus Cor Von & Kevin Thorn w/ Ariel
A very sloppy match. Dreamer sunset flips Thorn from the corner and just as the ref goes to slap the mat a third time, Dreamer grabs the bottom rope for leverage and gets the pin. No one really knows the match is over.
Winners via pinfall: The Sandman & Tommy Dreamer
Replays show Thorn had his right shoulder up, but Joey Styles claims the pinfall was a “referee’s decision.” Um, OK.
Punk and Matt Striker are backstage and tease more tension.
ECW champ Bobby Lashley hits the ring and shows what happened last night with Santino Marella winning the Intercontinental title from Umaga. Does anyone else agree with me in that the I-C belt is pretty much worthless now? Feuds used to go on for months between guys battling for the title, but now it gets given to Umaga (did he ever defend the title?) and now some OVW rookie gets it. Go ahead, Vince, degrade the belt just a little more. Maybe Stephanie McMahon gets it next.
Oh, sorry, we have a promo going on. Marella says something in Italian and Styles and Tazz sell the fact that Marella was born in Italy, trained in Canada and was here visiting family. I thought he was Russian?
Punk berates Cor Von and Thorn backstage for losing and tells them to get back on their feet. Burke then confronts Punk and tells him, again, to fall in line. Punk says he has Burke’s back tonight against RVD.
Match # 3 – Rob Van Dam vs. Elijah Burke
Nothing special here. RVD hits his usual offense of kicks, while Burke uses resthold after resthold.
Referee Scott Armstrong gets crunched in the corner by Burke and then kicked by RVD, who was gunning for Burke. RVD nails the windmill kick, but Burke brings up the knees to block Rolling Thunder.
Punk runs down to ringside and grabs a chair. He slides it “inadvertently” past Burke and to RVD, who heaves it at Burke’s dome. A Five-Star Frog Splash later and Van Dam wins.
Winner via pinfall: Rob Van Dam
Punk comes into the ring and "apologizes" to Burke. Wouldn’t you have thought that Punk wanted to, he would have tried to fix his mistake and attack RVD? Me too. I don’t think this run with the New Breed will last very long. Made no sense from the start. What do you think?
Matt Mackinder hoped to file this report on location. No such luck. But he was overly excited that there were no dancing girls this week! Email Matt at email@example.com.
