ECW: Originals and New Breed Extreme rematch
By MATT MACKINDER - SLAM! Wrestling
ECW had a decent showing at WrestleMania 23 and didnít put on the train wreck everyone was thinking would happen. Letís see if the momentum continues tonight on Sci-Fi.
Tonightís main event is an Extreme Rules match between the ECW Originals and the New Breed. I hope we actually get tables and chairs and maybe some juice.
ECW champion Bobby Lashley hits the ring and gets a nice pop, unlike last night on Raw where he heard the boo birds during his match with Umaga and Armando Alejandro Estrada. The champ shows pictures and video of Vince McMahon getting shorn on Sunday and the events of last night on Raw. Lashley ends the promo by saying he knows McMahon will send an army after him, but he doesnít care.
The trailer and world premiere recap for The Condemned is shown. Movie looks decent, but I bet it would get only a handful of viewers if the name Stone Cold Steve Austin wasnít attached to it.
Match # 1 Ė CM Punk vs. Stevie Richards
Punk has his ribs taped and itís noted by Joey Styles and Tazz that the injury is from the Money In The Bank Ladder Match at WrestleMania. Lots of mat and technical wrestling early with a couple near falls. Punk regroups and nails the ECW Original with kicks, slaps and fists and then his Firemanís Carry/knee to the face move, now called the GTS (Go To Sleep), for the three.
Winner via pinfall: CM Punk
Rob Van Dam is in the back with rapper Timbaland. Extreme Exposé pops in and says they are big fans of Timbaland and theyíll impress him with their dance moves later on. And yes, folks, these ladies did appear at Ford Field, but not in the ring, so I didnít subject myself to hurling on Sunday.
Punk gets confronted by Matt Striker and Marcus Cor Von backstage and Cor Von tells Punk heís either with the New Breed or against them. Punk stares down Striker and the Alpha Male as they walk away.
Bathroom break. The song of choice this week for Layla, Brooke and Kelly Kelly is Timbalandís Give It To Me.
A WrestleMania recap video is shown to the tune of The Memory Will Never Die by Default and the WrestleMania theme, Ladies and Gentlemen by Saliva.
Match # 2 Ė Hardcore Holly vs. Snitsky
Another potty break. Not a total squash, but Snitsky gets the pin after his big boot.
Winner via pinfall: Snitsky
Snitsky attacks Holly on the floor after the match with the ring steps and a chair and leaves Sparky writhing in pain.
The Hall of Fame ceremony is recapped. Iíve heard from those that went that you either loved it or were bored out of your mind.
Match # 3 Ė Extreme Rules Ė The ECW Originals (The Sandman, Rob Van Dam, Sabu & Tommy Dreamer) vs. The New Breed (Matt Striker, Marcus Cor Von, Elijah Burke and Kevin Thorn w/ Ariel)
Iíll go on record and say this match was one of the best, if not the best, on ECW since the brand was re-launched last summer.
RVD fills the ring with garbage cans and stop signs and the Originals quickly clear the ring. Dreamer gets held at bay in the corner and is triple-teamed by three members of the New Breed while the other keeps the other Originals outside. Burke gets put up in the Tree of Woe and Dreamer kicks a chair into his face. Dreamer then DDTs Thorn while at the same time hitting a neckbreaker on Burke.
Dreamer is really on in this match and lands a solid spinebuster on Striker on a garbage can. Sandman takes the body block from Cor Von, but Thorn gets put on a table and Sabu and RVD each land a double leg drop on the vampire through the wood. Striker charges Sabu with a stop sign, but gets backdropped over the top. As Sabu has his back turned, Burke charges with the Elijah Express and hammers Sabu through a table that was propped in the corner. Burke covers and gets the win for the New Breed.
Winners via pinfall: The New Breed
This match should have come at WrestleMania, but for free TV, you wonít get much better.
Have a good week and keep those emails coming.
