ROH brings two supercards to Detroit
By JASON CLEVETT - SLAM! Wrestling

This weekend, wrestling fans from 35 states as well as 12 countries descend not only on Ford Field, also on the Detroit fairgrounds. Fans seeking an alternative to the glitz and glamour of Wrestlemania will get their dose of pure wrestling when Ring of Honor presents back-to-back events March 30th and 31st.

"There are a lot of people that travel to Wrestlemania from all over the world. We discovered from the Elizabeth and Chicago shows, wrestling fans, even though they are coming to Wrestlemania, want an alternative and true wrestling fans want to see a variety of wrestling and this is a chance to see Ring of Honor," ROH owner Cary Silkin told SLAM! Wrestling. "I have seen the orders that have come in, a lot of customers are making the effort to come and see at least one of the two shows to compliment their Wrestlemania experience. There will probably be a few people who go to the ROH shows that won't go to Wrestlemania."

It's fun meeting the diverse fans, said Silkin. And often WWE names come by to visit old friends backstage as well. "It's an exciting time, the Super Bowl of Wrestling weekend and we want to be in that area and give people the opportunity to see us. We are getting a very good reaction on the Detroit shows and they are going to be awesome."

SLAM! Wrestling presents a brief preview of what you be expected each night. Tickets are on sale at ROHWrestling.com and are 20% off until March 29th. ROH has also teamed up with the Detroit Beer Company for a promotion where you can have lunch with ROH wrestlers and then take a shuttle to the event.

Night one on Friday, dubbed "All Star Extravaganza III" will feature a special appearance by former world champion Bruno Sammartino, who will be signing autographs. The headlining match features ROH vs. Japan's Dragon Gate promotion, as Austin Aries, Delirious, Rocky Romero and Claudio Castagnoli take on CIMA, Susumu Yokosuka, Dragon Kid and Ryo Saito. The Dragon Gate challenge continues as ROH Tag Team Champions Naruki Doi & Shingo defend against the men they defeated in for the belts in Liverpool, England, Jay and Mark Briscoe, and Davey Richards faces Masaaki Michizuki. Also on the card is a bout between two men who appeared on the first ROH show five years ago - "The Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels and Homicide. Rounding out the top matches on the first night is a battle between former tag team partners. Jack Evans and Roderick Strong were arguably one of the best tag teams in the world in 2004 and 2005 but have now split up and will go one-on-one.

Saturday night is the sequel to last year's "Supercard of Honor," when the Dragon Gate stars stole the show with what many consider the match of 2006 and received a standing ovation from the Chicago crowd. "Supercard of Honor II" will feature a rematch as CIMA, Shingo and Susumu Yokosuka take on Dragon Kid, Ryo Saito and Masaaki Mochizuki. Former friends and tag team champions Roderick Strong and Austin Aries recently had a violent split when Strong turned on Aries. The two will face off with Strong's Full Impact Pro World Title on the line.

Another former championship team, Jimmy Jacobs and BJ Whitmer have been at each other's throats for a year. After several incredibly violent matches, including one where Whitmer powerbombed Jacobs from the top rope into the crowd, these two will face off in a steel cage. Also scheduled is The Briscoe Brothers vs. Christopher Daniels and Matt Sydal. These four stole the show in Chicago in February when the Briscoes defeated Daniels and Sydal to win the tag team championship.

These are just some of the matches that will take place this weekend. The stacked shows will also feature stars like Chris Hero, Nigel McGuinness, Colt Cabana and Delirious.
