ECW: Going ape on SciFi
By MATT MACKINDER - SLAM! Wrestling

Being that tonight's ECW show is emanating from Milwaukee, you'd have to think The Sandman would be on the show. Or that at least there would be some Halloween flare. Hopefully we get both and maybe more.

A recap of Rob Van Dam's victory over The Big Show last week in the Ladder Match is shown and then Paul Heyman (with a tan?) pops up backstage. He says RVD did win the right to face Big Show for the ECW title, but that he gets to make the stipulations -- RVD and Show will be two of six participants in the first-ever Extreme Elimination Chamber match at December To Dismember. I hope this comes off as something sweet and not just another ruse to suck us in to buying the pay-per-view.

Match # 1 -- Extreme Elimination Chamber Qualifying Match - Sabu vs. Kevin Thorn

Yeah, as if Sabu's going to lose this match. Joey Styles says that Halloween is the one day of the year people don't stare at Thorn and Ariel. Thorn works on Sabu's left shoulder, but Sabu comes back with three springboard moves -- leg lariat, clothesline, elbow. He then hits a springboard DDT and locks in the camel clutch to make Thorn tap.

Winner via submission: Sabu

Rebecca is in the back with The Sandman when a clown (no, not Doink) pops into the picture. Sandman excuses himself and canes the holy hell out of the clown. He comes back laughing, but Rebecca looks petrified. Good stuff here to hype Sandman and Umaga at Cyber Sunday. That's what the match should be in my eyes anyway.

And now, sadly, yes. More footage and interviews from The Marine. This time the cast talks about filming the swamp and jungle scenes. Is this movie at the $1 show yet?

A person dressed up as a crazed doctor is shown in the crowd and Styles calls it Balls Mahoney's proctologist. Classic. A gorilla and a grim reaper figure are also shown. Tazz then gives Styles a Halloween gift -- a noose. I guess.

Match # 2 -- Daivari vs. Shannon Moore

Daivari brings out The Great Khali, who we haven't seen since his Last Man Standing match with The Undertaker, right?. The crowd isn't quite sure what to think; neither do I. Daivari blabs his native tongue on the mic and suddenly his English is gone. He spoke perfect English on Smackdown, so what happened? Daivari works on Moore's left arm and shoulder before hitting a DDT for the quick pin.

Winner via pinfall: Daivari

Khali comes into the ring and chokeslam powerbombs Moore. I love the eight-inch protruding chin on Khali. Adds to his mystique. And makes you almost forget that he can't wrestle.

RVD is in the back with Rebecca and says it's Halloween and Heyman pulled a trick on him with the Extreme Elimination Chamber stipulation. He says it doesn't matter because he's leaving December To Dismember as ECW champ. Hardcore Holly appears and tells RVD that after the 24 stitches and 12-inch scar on his back from their match a month ago, it's ironic that tonight, he has his back.

The main event is RVD and Holly versus Show and Test.

It's now time for my wife, Stephanie, to go to bed so I can watch the Diva Costume Contest. Trinity has caution tape across her chest, Ariel is dressed how she normally is and Kelly Kelly is the spitting image of one CM Punk. My vote was for Kelly, but the fans chose Trinity. OK, I'll go with that. Mike Knox storms the ring, but gets jumped by Punk, who kicks Knox out of the ring. In the back, Knox challenges Punk to a one-on-one match next week. About freakin' time, people!

Match # 3 -- Rob Van Dam & Hardcore Holly vs. The Big Show and Test

RVD and Test start and Test controls until Van Dam comes back with a couple spin kicks and tags in Holly for a stretch. Once RVD gets the tag back in, he works over Test and gets a couple near-falls. The two battle on the apron, with RVD hitting a cross body over the top rope and both land hard on the floor. Commercial time.

A quick promo is shown for CM Punk's appearance on Ghost Hunters next on SciFi.

Back in the ring, some solid back-and-forth action, but Show still hasn't been tagged in. Once he does, he misses a Vader Bomb on Holly and RVD gets the hot tag. Van Dam nails Rolling Thunder on the champ, but Test breaks up the pin. All four men are in the ring and Test accidentally clotheslines the ref from behind. Holly gives Test the Alabama Slam and RVD and Show are on the floor. RVD is measuring Show from the ring steps, but the gorilla clobbers Van Dam from behind with a pipe. Show rolls RVD back inside, hits a choke slam and gets the 1-2-3.

Winners via pinfall: Big Show & Test

The gorilla comes into the ring and is unmasked to be Heyman. Big surprise eh?

All in all a decent show tonight, but with no Extreme Rules matches the show lacks luster a smidge.

  • Brian Pillman - Loose Cannon Double DVD

Matt Mackinder's 14-month-old son, Ethan, enjoyed his second Halloween and dressed up as his hero, Winnie the Pooh, tonight. He doesn't have quite a grasp on Halloween yet as he ran from the door when his cousin came as Yoda. But Matt still found time to get the TV for an hour. Email Matt at mackindermedia@yahoo.com.
