ECW: Van Dam climbs the ladder
By MATT MACKINDER - SLAM! Wrestling

I don't know. After being at Bound For Glory Sunday night, tonight's ECW show from St. Louis might be a letdown. The crowd might be light, too, as World Series Game 3 is going on simultaneously.

A recap of Rob Van Dam's victory over The Big Show last week is shown and then RVD hits the ring. He wants to know when he gets his title shot against Big Show and Paul Heyman and his personal security come down. Heyman has a contract and says in order to get the match with the champ, RVD must win the Ladder Match later tonight with the contract hanging above the ring. The goons jump RVD, but Van Dam fights them off. Nice opening, but will the enforcers ever be unmasked?

Match # 1 -- C.M. Punk vs. Matt Striker

I fear Punk's matches are getting stale. Lots of mat and technical wrestling in the early going, until Striker tosses Punk into the ring post and tries for an armbar submission. Punk hits his running knee in the corner and bulldog follow-up. He then goes for the Yuranagi, but Mike Knox jumps in and pummels Punk. Knox ends up on the floor after a kick from Punk and he retreats to the back.

Winner via DQ: C.M. Punk

I still despise DQ wins in ECW. I just do.

The "feud" between Hardcore Holly and Test is reviewed and we're left to wonder who the face is in this program.

Match # 2 -- Hardcore Holly vs. Test

Holly gets the cheers from the crowd and starts out with the early advantage. Both throw lots of kicks and punches until Test gets tied up in the top two ropes and Holly goes to work. Test then gets suplexed to the outside as we head to commercial. Back from the break, Holly gets rammed into the post four times and Tazz and Joey Styles play up the Holly back injury some more. The end comes when Test throws Holly into the post and rolls him up with the tights for three. Almost a four-star match, but the tainted ending ruins it. The crowd's boos back me up on that.

Winner via pinfall: Test

Test comes back into the ring with a chair and cracks Holly three times across the back. More boos ensue.

It's time for more hype and praise for The Marine. WWE stars are asked who is more intense: John Cena or John Triton, his character in the film. Most agree it's John Triton. With all the previews and trailers we've seen of this movie, haven't we pretty much seen the whole thing?

Heyman and Show are shown backstage talking strategy.

Rebecca Dipietro interviews The Sandman. Nice voice, Hak. He hypes Cyber Sunday and the fact he wants to face Umaga. He says he's beaten up plenty of Samoans in bars. The beer bash ends the segment with Sandman proclaiming, I'm the Sandman and I approve this message." Good stuff I suppose.

Match # 3 -- Ladder Match -- Rob Van Dam vs. The Big Show

A non-title match, obviously. RVD starts out with a flurry of kicks and punches and knocks Show to the mat with a kick from the top. Van Dam brings the ladder in and busts Show open (the norm for any Show match these days). He kicks the ladder into Big Show with a modified standing Van Daminator and then hits Rolling Thunder with the chair atop Show. RVD tries to climb the ladder to get the contract, but Show pushes the ladder into the ropes and Van Dam goes throat-first. Show's face is a mess at this point a la Ric Flair in the 1980s.

Show goes for a Vader Bomb, but lands on the ladder. He just can't take a bump cleanly can he? Show nails RVD with a chokeslam and sets up the ladder. By the way, we were never told what happens if Big Show gets the contract first. Van Dam hops up, climbs the ladder and jumps onto Show's shoulders. Show pitches him to the floor, but then some reason falls over the top rope and looks out of it. Van Dam goes back in, scales the ladder and grabs the contract.

Winner: Rob Van Dam

RVD now just has to fill in the date and place for his title shot. Show is despondent, almost crying, on the floor. Will Van Dam want a title shot before Cyber Sunday? I hope not. Maybe at Survivor Series? That's what I'm hoping for. But we'll see.

Lackluster show tonight with no Extreme Rules matches. Maybe I'm still on a high from Sunday's TNA extravaganza. Maybe ECW just has boring shows. Probably a little bit of both.

Matt Mackinder quickly deleted this ECW show from his DVR. Wouldn't you? He hopes the Tigers come back and take Game 4 Wednesday night, too. Email Matt at mackindermedia@yahoo.com.
