Angle still feels pain of working for WWE
By TIM BAINES - Ottawa Sun

Kurt Angle is angry. And it's not just part of some fluffy storyline with him strumming a ukulele and wearing a miniature cowboy hat.

Angle's anger at WWE boss Vince McMahon is very real. Oh, it's true.

Angle, who recently made a splash by signing with TNA, says WWE's demanding workload nearly killed his marriage, then himself.

"I had a great relationship with Vince, but it turned sour," Angle said. "I would never trade in my life for wrestling, but that's what I was being asked to do.

"I hate to admit it, but my wife (Karen) was always right. She told me not to trust the guys (at WWE). Not to buy into the bogus B.S. between the boss and his big guys.

"My wife and I were separated at one point. I almost lost my marriage and my family life and I don't think my boss really cared. In my life, God is first, my family's second and my job is third."

So what set off the former Olympic gold medallist, a star of stars.

"I was never given enough time to heal," said Angle, who's had five neck injuries. "I worked 260-300 days a year with my former employer. I felt like I was being buried into the ground. When I asked for time off, they gave it to me, but when I was off, they'd say they needed me."

Angle says he wasn't fired from WWE, he quit.

"I'm the one who asked to meet with Vince and I'm the one who asked for my release," said Angle. "Rumours of me being pushed out or fired are false. I did not want to stay. I wasn't having fun. They had no reason to push me out. I was their best wrestler. In a nutshell,I asked for a meeting and I got my release, but (Vince) asked if we could make it a mutual release."

And how about the painkillers that were rumoured to have driven him out?

"I haven't taken painkillers in (18 months)," he said. "I had to do it after the neck surgery and a lack of time off. I met with Jim Ross and John Laurinaitis, then Vince ... and I told them, 'I'm afraid I'm going to die.'

"I had to take (the painkillers) to function. I couldn't get out of bed until I took a large dose, a handful.

"I found a pain doctor ... I had a pay-per-view match against John Cena three days later. The doctor said I had to go to rehab. I told him I was going to stop cold turkey and he said that could kill me.

"I told Vince I needed three months off. But he told me to rehab by myself on the road. When I was in the ring against Cena, I was in major withdrawal, I thought I was going to have a heart attack.

"The only thing WWE cared about was putting Cena over. I made Cena look much better than he is. When I got backstage, I fell on my face and was out."

Angle is pumped about working for TNA.

"These athletes in TNA are so phenomenal,"he said. "Compared to WWE, they're five times better.

"There's a short list of guys who can main event, but the list is endless in TNA.

Angle is leaving the door open to a mixed martial arts bout.

"I'm interested in MMA, yes,"he said. "There was an offer there (to fight Brock Lesnar). And we're talking retirement money ($10 million for eight years) ... more than they've probably ever paid anyone else."
