ECW: RVD can't pass the Test
By MATT MACKINDER - SLAM! Wrestling
This may not have been the best ECW to date, but it was certainly one of the better main events as Rob Van Dam and Test waged war in an Extreme Rules bout. Who won? Read on, lads (and lasses).
Live from Topeka, Kansas, the show starts with Paul Heyman and Hardcore Holly in the back. Holly wants RVD tonight, but Heyman says he can't book him due to liability insurance. Holly grabs Heyman by the collar, but gets blasted in the back with a chair from Test. Heyman then announces Test and RVD as the main event.
Match # 1 -- The Sandman & Sabu vs. Matt Striker & The Big Show
Show looks meaner with the clean-shaven look. Sabu is isolated much of the match until Sandman gets the hot tag. He hits the Heinekenrana on Striker, but Show comes in, pitches Sabu to the floor, splashes Sandman and Striker gets the 1-2-3. Kind of a garbage finish, but still an entertaining match.
Winners via pinfall: Matt Striker & The Big Show
Kelly Kelly and Trinity hype next week's Extreme Strip Poker game. Trinity says nothing beats a full house, but Kelly says a pair of aces do. She then removes her top to reveal two aces covering her breasts. Classy.
Match # 2 -- Tommy Dreamer vs. Kevin Thorn
Not a whole lot to this one except Ariel on the outside screaming "Get 'em, Thorn" every five seconds. Thorn rolls out of the ring after a DDT, grabs his walking stick, clocks Dreamer with it while the ref's back was turned for some reason and gets three.
Winner via pinfall: Kevin Thorn
Another preview of The Marine shows with the cast talking about John Cena doing all his own stunts. The movie comes out Oct. 13.
Maria is up next talking up the Extreme Strip Poker. She'll be on Sci-Fi next week with Raw's Candice Michelle. Maria says someone told her none of her cards can match and that's how everyone wins.
Maria's appearance (coincidentally) segues us into...
Match # 3 -- C.M. Punk vs. Danny Doring
When do we find out what C.M. stands for? Email me if you know or have ideas. And if your answer is "chick magnet," I've heard that one a million times.
Punk decimates Doring. He nails a double underhook suplex into a backbreaker and hits the Yuranagi/Anaconda Vice combo for a quick submission to stay undefeated.
Winner via submission: C.M. Punk
Kelly then comes to the stage and congratulates Punk and says this one is for him. A strip tease starts, but Mike Knox intervenes (yawn). Knox grabs the mic and tells Punk to stay away from his girl. Punk responds saying the problem is Kelly not staying away from him. Knox charges the ring, but backs down from Punk. Start the feud, already, sheesh.
Kristal and Ashley from SmackDown! are on next hyping Extreme Strip Poker. They have a disagreement at the end and argue -- par for the course.
Match # 4 -- Extreme Rules -- Rob Van Dam vs. Test
The RVD chants come out early. Van Dam misses his spin kick from the apron to the ring barricade, but recovers to hit Rolling Thunder on Test, who was prone on the ring steps. RVD sets up a table on the floor and Test brings four chairs into the ring. RVD escapes a suplex and hurls a chair at Test in a nice spot. Van Dam then sunset flip power bombs Test through the table at ringside and we head to a commercial break.
Heyman and his personal enforcers head down and jump Van Dam. They throw him into the ring post and batter him with a night stick. In the ring, Test heaves RVD through a chair that was wedged between the top and middle rope for one of several two counts. RVD gets out of a bear hug, but Test nails a chair throw for another two count. Van Dam looks out on his feet. Test takes the top turnbuckle pad off, but RVD comes alive and hits a dropkick into a chair on Test. Another Rolling Thunder lands RVD on a chair.
Test places a chair on Van Dam, grabs another from one of Heyman's enforcers, and drops down on Van Dam, who looks whipped. So does Test. RVD has a second wind, puts Test on a table after ramming him into the exposed buckle, dropkicks the enforcers off the apron and then drops down onto them at ringside. RVD sets up for the Five Star Frog Splash, but Big Show hustles out and pushes Van Dam off and through the table. Test then nails his F-5/RKO/neckbreaker move and wins.
Winner via pinfall: Test
Matt Mackinder, though switching back and forth between ECW and the Tigers-Yankees game, filed this recap before midnight. Tigers still lost, though. They'll be back in Game 2. Email Matt at firstname.lastname@example.org.
