honest. When I saw the preview for tonightís ECW show, I was less than impressed. A Big Show title match and an Extreme Rules Match with Rob Van Dam and Hardcore Holly - blah blah blah, right? Boy was I wrong.
Live from Tulsa, Oklahoma, ring announcer Justin Roberts announces Jim Ross as the special guest for the evening. J.R. hypes ECW as a new version of Mid-South Wrestling before Matt Striker interrupts by saying J.R. lacks education. The Sandman appears and canes Striker in the gut before handing the Singapore cane to J.R., who blasts Striker across the back. Sandman and Ross then have a beer bash in the ring.
Eric Bischoff then cuts a promo on his new book Controversy Creates Ca$hand says pissing off the McMahon family is only the beginning.
Match # 1 Ė Extreme Rules - Rob Van Dam vs. Hardcore Holly
This match starts out slow and boring before Holly superplexes RVD inside out through a table. After a commercial break, Hollyís back is a gruesome mess. Replays show his back was
sliced open, literally, by the metal frame on the table. Back in the ring, Van Dam suplexes Holly onto a chair and the blood keeps flowing. A sweet bump saw RVD put the chair onto a prone Holly and go for the Five Star Frog Splash. As RVD descended, Holly threw the chair in his face. But after a standing dropkick into the chair into Holly, RVD nails the Five Star and itís over.
Winners via pinfall: Rob Van Dam
A doctor and paramedic tend to Holly in the ring and he leaves to his music and a well-deserved standing ovation. This match was almost 20 minutes long and though it started out sluggish, it ended up being a solid bout Ė a splendid effort from both wrestlers.
C.M. Punk, AKA the future of ECW, is in the back saying heís addicted to competition saying he wants RVD, Big Show and Sandman in the ring. Kelly Kelly interrupts and asks Punk if heís aware of the Extreme Strip Poker event in two weeks. Punk is awesome here. Mike Knox, of course, shows up and asks Kelly what the deal is with Punk, who tells Knox the fence he built around Kelly isnít holding her and sheís in his yard. Knox says heíll deal with his woman and be back for Punk. This should be a decent feud.
Another preview of The Marineis shown and John Cena discusses his wife in the movie, Kelly Carlson. She says heís a great kisser and Cena adds that sheís hot. I canít say I
donít agree with ya, champ.
Match # 2 Ė Extreme Catfight Ė Francine vs. Ariel
Thankfully, a short one and nothing much to write about here. Kevin Thorn interferes and drags Francine off Ariel before Balls Mahoney shows up to crack Thorn in the dome with a chair.
Winner: No Contest
Heyman and Big Show are in the back and Heyman talks up Sandman saying heís very dangerous, especially with the cane.
Show says if Sandman uses the cane, heíll turn him into a popsicle. Show adds that he wants the cane to be legal in their match.
Another segment I can do without. Rene Dupree waltzes out of the shower and says heís the most extreme in ECW. He then removes his towel, takes a gander at his unit, and smirks. That was 30 seconds of my life I will never get back.
Match # 3 Ė The Sandman vs. ECW World Champion The Big Show
Sandman starts out beating the stew out of Show with the cane and busting him open on the floor.
Midway through, Joey Styles tells us that Hardcore Holly needed 24 stitches to close the wound that went into his fatty tissue by his ribs. Wowzers!
Sandman reverses a chokeslam into a DDT and rolls to grab his cane. Striker is at ringside and takes the cane out of Sandmanís grasp. Show hits his Cobra Clutch/backbreaker move and gets the duke with the Showstopper Legdrop.
Winner via pinfall: The Big Show
Matt Mackinder only yawned once during
ECW. But he still wishes Hardcore Holly would go back and dig up his Sparky Plugg gimmick. Email Matt at firstname.lastname@example.org.
