WWE releases Kurt Angle

Former WWE world champion and Olympic gold medallist Kurt Angle has been released from the company, according their website.

"Due to personal issues, Kurt Angle has been granted an early release from his contract. WWE looks forward to establishing a new relationship with Kurt in the near future," it says.

Angle was recently suspended for thirty days, and upon his return to ECW suffered a groin tear, removing him again from ECW programming.

Angle signed with the WWE in 1998 and debuted with the company at the Survivor Series in 1999 against Shawn Stasiak. He quickly advanced through the company, winning the European and Intercontinental championships before Wrestlemania 2000. He won the King of the Ring 2000 tournament before defeating The Rock for his first WWF title at No Mercy in October 2000.

Angle has remained a main event level star in the WWE, including main event matches at Wrestlemania XIX and Wrestlemania XX. He also had a run as General Manager of Smackdown in 2004. He has won the Smackdown tag team championship once, WWE Championship four times, the WCW title once and the World Championship one time. In June he moved to the new ECW brand as in a straight up wrestling machine gimmick. His last match was a number one contender's match against Sabu on August 9th, and he was shown backstage being prevented from competing on the August 15th broadcast.
