Nitro making impact in WWE
By TIM BAINES - Ottawa Sun

Johnny Nitro

If Johnny Nitro wasn't being chased around by paparazzi ... if he wasn't head over heels in love with Melina Perez ... if he wasn't a wrestler of note, currently holding onto WWE's intercontinental championship ... well, he'd just be John Hennigan, a Tough Enough 3 winner whose gained plenty of fame with a name change.

And he'd probably be a film producer of sorts.

First, let's break some hearts.

Yes, the rumours are true. Nitro and Melina are a real-life boyfriend/girlfriend.

"Everywhere we go, I have to fight the guys off her with a stick," says Nitro with a laugh. "She tried out for Tough Enough 3 and we met briefly. (When we met again in Louisville), I didn't waste much time ... I scooped her up pretty fast."

The dynamic duo recently moved to Los Angeles where they live together.

Oh, and about making movies.

"I went to the University of California," says Nitro. "I majored in film studies. And I was a martial arts freak ... so I was making kung fu movies.

"I did The Foot of Death. I mounted a camera on a fake leg with a shoe and ran around chasing people."

There may be no need to return to his filmwork anytime soon. At least not while he's making such an impact on the wrestling world.

"I wouldn't say I've exceeded my expectations in wrestling," says 26-year-old Nitro. "But maybe my expectations are unrealistic. I walk a fine line between cockiness and arrogance. I'm not 280 lbs., but I personally feel that I can put on a better match than anybody on the roster. I don't really care whether people like me. If they decide to cheer for me, that's good. But I'm not going to change who I am."

    - Here's the lineup for tonight's Summer Slam pay-per-view: Edge vs. John Cena; King Booker vs. Batista; D-Generation X vs. Vince and Shane McMahon; Hulk Hogan vs. Randy Orton (do the right thing, Hulk ... take the three count and stop putting yourself above the business); Mick Foley vs. Ric Flair (I Quit match); Rey Mysterio vs. Chavo Guerrero; and The Big Show vs. Sabu.

    - Jeff Hardy returns to WWE tomorrow night on RAW. It would make sense to reunite him with brother Matt.

    - Layla El is the winner of the 2006 Diva Search.

    - Lita is the new women's champ, beating Mickie James on RAW ... that makes Lita and Edge WWE's golden couple.

    - Brock Lesnar has announced he'll compete in mixed martial arts (K-1 Hero's) with Royce Gracie as his trainer. His MMA debut is expected to be in February.

    - WWE will have a tryout camp Sept. 19 from 3-5 p.m. at Ottawa's Scotiabank Place. Check out secure.wwe.com/forms/tryout/ if you're interested. At 7:30 that night, WWE will hold a Smackdown! live event. Matches include: Batista and Mysterio vs. King Booker and Kurt Angle; Finlay vs. William Regal vs. Chavo Guerrero; Paul London and Brian Kendrick vs. Jamie Noble and Kid Kash; Matt Hardy vs. Sylvester Terkay; and Ashley vs. Michelle McCool.

    - The good boy is now a bad boy. Christian Cage cost Sting his match against Jeff Jarrett at the TNA Hard Justice pay-per-view last Sunday. And now you can bet that Sting has his sights set on Cage. Other results: Eric Young beat Johnny Devine; Chris Sabin beat Alex Shelley; Abyss beat Brother Runt; Samoa Joe beat Rhino and Monty Brown; Gail Kim beat Sirelda; Senshi beat Petey Williams and Jay Lethal; and AJ Styles and Christopher Daniels beat The Latin American Exchange. And ... this is a spoiler, read no further if you don't want to know that ... The Latin American Exchange won the tag titles in tapings for next week's Impact.

    - UWA's Aug. 24 Chaos in the Capital show at the SuperEx has an awesome main event of Abyss vs. Rhino (Monster's Ball match). TNA's Scott D'Amore will host a seminar before the show. Check out universalwrestlingalliance.com for more details. The following night, Aug. 25, UWA will hold its Heat Wave show in Brockville.

    - The second Titans In Toronto dinner will be held on Sept. 30 at the Meron Banquet Hall in Toronto. Tickets are $65 for the Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame fundraiser.
