Smackdown: Mysterio invades the King's Court
ANDY McNAMARA - SLAM! Wrestling
The tension is thick tonight in Minneapolis as the world will witness the contract signing for a match between two bitter rivals: Batista and Mark Henry. Fireworks are a definite in that encounter but what about the mounting bitterness between King Booker T and World champ Rey Mysterio? Throw in a U.S. Championship between hated enemies Finlay and Lashley and this truly is a night of intense battles.
King Booker, Queen Sharmell, and William Regal are holding court in the ring. It is announced that Regal will take on Rey Mysterio tonight in an attempt to soften up the World Heavyweight champion for the king. Booker then shows a clip of how he beat the hell out of Rey Mysterio backstage after last week's show. The champ sneak attacks Booker after coming out of the crowd, and quickly dismantles his royal highness before making a hasty escape.
Match 1: Matt Hardy vs. Ken Kennedy
After Mr. Kennedy insults his opponent, Hardy interrupts Kennedy's self introduction with a forearm to the back. As Mattitude runs wild JBL reminds us that Mr. Kennedy has never been pinned on Friday Night Smackdown. It amazes me how over Matt Hardy continues to be and how little a push he continues to receive. Eventually Kennedy turns the momentum with some quick attacks followed up by a modified arm bar. These two are demonstrating some good chemistry in the ring. Hardy scores a near fall following a Side Effect, but is stopped on his Twist of Fate attempt; some great back and forth action here. The finish comes when Kennedy goes for a cocky pin and Hardy rolls him up in a small package for the win! This is Kennedy's first time being pinned in the WWE on TV.
WINNER: Matt Hardy
A brawl backstage unfolds between Ashley and Jillian Hall vs. Krystal and Michelle McCool. I smell a tag match in the works.
Walking down the aisle is the monstrous Great Khali and his manager Davairi. The side kick demands that The Undertaker show himself ... and then the lights go out. When the purple lights come on Taker is standing in the ring and the crowd erupts! Davairi says The Dead Man is still scared, however, The Undertaker summons lightning. Davairi scrambles for cover, but The Great Khali does not flinch. After trying to go to the ring Davairi convinces his behemoth to leave the area.
Match 2: Paul London w/ Brian Kendrick vs. Jamie Noble w/ Kid Kash
We are informed that at The Great American Bash The Pit Bulls will take on the tag title holders London and Kendrick. Noble is off to a quick hard hitting start, and excluding a brief London roll up, is owning one half of the tag team champions. Noble can only ground the high flyer for so long before London's speed takes over. After the referee is distracted by the dog chain, Kash sneaks up to snap London's neck over the top rope. This allows Noble to recover and hit a modified Death Valley Driver to pick up the victory.
WINNER: Jamie Noble
Sylvain "The Official Ambassador" for Quebec is in the locker room telling everyone once again to vacation in Quebec this summer. Now I understand he's a heel, but he's not saying anything offensive to anyone! Sylvain is simply talking about what is in Quebec. Oh well.
GM Teddy Long is in the ring for the official Great American Bash contract signing between bitter rivals Mark Henry and Batista. Teddy announces that the winner of this match will go on to face the World Heavyweight champion at SummerSlam! Also, if either Batista or Henry touch one another before their matchup then they will forfeit their #1 contender chance. The Animal is welcomed to a thunderous ovation as he comes down to the ring. Batista thanks the crowd and says how frustrated he was sitting at home and seeing Mark Henry run rampant on Smackdown. After Henry comes in and mouths off, he flips the table and the two warriors almost come to blows. Cooler heads prevail and Teddy Long is able to keep the peace.
Match 3: U.S. Championship- Finlay vs. Bobby Lashley (c)
These guys have had some awesome hard hitting bouts and I'm sure this one will be no different. The two size each other up, but it does not take long for the back and forth pounding to begin. Following the commercial break, Finlay is in full control and tosses the champ into the steel post. Lashely rebounds with some suplexes and is able to dodge the shillelagh attack, and then tosses it up the ramp. Lashley is distracted briefly by Finlay's "little bastard", allowing the Irishman to attack with another shillelagh and pin Lashley! Your new WWE United States champion is Finlay!
The Miz is hosting the Diva contest bootcamp competition. Layla ends up winning with a time of 37 seconds.
Match 4: Main Event- Non-Title: Rey Mysterio vs. William Regal
King Booker and Queen Sharmell are joining the broadcast team to take in the main event contest. Following the commercials we are shown how Booker distracted Rey during the break, allowing Regal to take control. As Mysterio is starting to hit some drop kicks, Sharmell jumps up on the apron, distracts the referee, and this again lets Regal gain the upper hand. Regal uses his unique European style to pick apart the champion. Rey Rey Drops The Dime for a near fall, and follows that up with a bronco buster. Booker tries once again to avert the official's attention but gets a baseball slide for his trouble. This gives Mysterio the chance to hit the 619, and finishes off Regal with a top rope splash. After the bell King Booker tries to sneak up on Rey, however, the champ nails a 619 on the outside steel post. Another drop kick lays Booker out, and the program goes off the air with the Queen attending to her King.
WINNER: Rey Mysterio
