The LAW moves up the Toronto dial
By GREG OLIVER - Producer, SLAM! Wrestling
Listeners to Live Audio Wrestling in Toronto this weekend, perhaps a little hungover from Canada Day festivities, are warned to check their station before tuning in Sunday -- the show has moved up the dial.
It's a big step up for the little radio show that grew. Launched on the Virtually Canadian internet service way back in 1997, Live Audio Wrestling, aka The LAW, has survived the test of time.
Now, it's making another move on the Toronto radio station list, this time to CFRB 1010, the best known talk radio station in town, having now left The FAN590 and then AM640.
"CFRB really is the pinnacle of Toronto AM Radio, so it's great for us at the LAW after all our years of hard work to finally make it to the top," said co-host Dan "The Mouth" Lovranski, who has been dabbling in the Toronto Pillow Fighting League on the side.
CFRB Newstalk1010 is trying to skew a little younger with their programming, and The LAW will keep its Sunday night timeslot from 11 p.m. ET to 1 a.m.
"One of the many great things about our move is that we're keeping our Sunday night timeslot and our lead in show is hosted by George Stroumboulopoulos, he's a great guy that I've known and respected for years," said co-host Jason Agnew. "Hopefully we can tempt some of his listeners to hang around and listen to us and vice versa."
The CFRB studio will be the base for the show, which also runs in other Canadian cities like Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg.
The LAW is an excellent addition to our programming line up at Newstalk1010 said Steve Kowch Operations Manager for the station. "It's not every day that you get to sign a show that has such as loyal audience and is a proven ratings winner all in one, which is why I'm confident that our listeners will also enjoy the LAW's brand of unique entertainment and information each and every Sunday night," he added.
Denied the ability to tell fans on the air about the impending move, The LAW is hopeful that their many Toronto listeners will find them on Sunday.
"Wrestling fans are very loyal and thus, so are LAW listeners. I meet fans on a regular basis that have been listening for nearly a decade, I have no doubt that we'll take our strong listenership to our new home at CFRB," said Agnew. "Normally when shows like ours change stations it's difficult to let all of the listeners know, the advantage that we have at The Law is becuase we're such an interactive program and most of our listeners regularly visit our website we should have no problem letting everyone know and taking our strong ratings with us to our new home"
Both CFRB and the owners of The LAW, The Fight Network, will work in a joint partnership to cross promote the radio property the LAW via its various media outlets, television, radio, web and mobile. Financial terms for the deal where not disclosed.
A book from The LAW is also in the works for ECW Press.
Greg Oliver is the Producer of SLAM! Wrestling and has had the pleasure of being on Thw LAW numerous times (as well as other great wrestling radio shows). In fact, Greg's first appearance on The LAW was with Jeff Marek, Donnie Abreu and Chris "Notorious TID" Tidwell, none of whom host the show anymore. Greg can be emailed at email@example.com.
