Smackdown: King Booker gets crowned
By ANDY McNAMARA - SLAM! Wrestling
It is a night of champions as almost all title holders are in action. King Booker will try to use his royal powers to take out United States champ Bobby Lashley in a grudge match that has been building since King Of The Ring. Throw in a non-title high flying affair with Rey Mysterio versus Cruiserweight Champ Gregory Helms and we have another night of Smackdown excitement!
JBL is introduced as the new Smackdown colour commentator. He says that it is "morning in America again" since he is now back on the program.
Match 1: Champion vs. Champion- Non-title: Rey Mysterio vs. Gregory Helms
Rey's shoulder is heavily taped after his battle with Sabu at ECW: One Night Stand. JBL is spouting out his Spanish racism as per usual, while Mysterio and Helms are keeping the match at a fast pace. Rey takes control after a hurracarrana sends Helms outside the ring and the World Champion follows that up with a baseball slide. Helms quickly recovers after Bradshaw distracts Rey Rey. Mysterio misses a 619, which the cruiserweight champ turns into a sit down powerbomb near fall. A few moments later Mysterio does connect with the 619 and then Drops The Dime for the win.
WINNER: Rey Mysterio
William Regal introduces King Booker and Queen Sharmell. Before the bell rings Lashley is attacked by Regal and Finlay. However, Matt Hardy and Gunner Scott quickly come to U.S. Champion's aide as the show cuts to commercial. Following the break we see a clip from Finlay delivering a nasty shillelagh shot to the knee. Lashley is backstage being attended to by the medics and says he will still fight Booker tonight.
Match 2: Ken Kennedy vs. ?
Kennedy takes it to the jobber fast and furious. Not much to this one as Mr. Kennedy finishes off the youngster with a unique type of neck breaker.
WINNER: Ken Kennedy
Psicosis and Super Crazy talk backstage about Psicosis leaving his partner to be destroyed by The Great Khali. The two make up and they have a handicap match vs. Khali tonight.
Match 3: Super Crazy & Psicosis vs. The Great Khali w/ Davairi
The two Mexicools tried to get a jump start on Khali but the giant shrugs them off and starts the beat down. Psicosis again runs away as Super Crazy gets double choke slammed. Poor Super Crazy is pinned with one foot and this one is over in a hurry. Davairi grabs the mic after the bout and says that everyone is afraid, including The Undertaker, of Khali.
WINNER: The Great Khali
Match 4: Matt Hardy & Gunner Scott vs. William Regal & Finlay
Finlay is doing his usual hard pounding, rough house style on Gunner Scott. Hardy eventually gets the tag and takes it to Finlay. A flying cross body by Hardy leads to Finlay's shillelagh getting pulled under the ring by the leprechaun. While the referee is distracted Hardy is low blowed by the little guy, who then sneaks back under the ring. Finlay and Regal keep double teaming Hardy while Gunner inadvertently keeps the referee with him as he tries to save his partner. Scott finally gets the hot tag and nails a missile dropkick from the top turnbuckle on Finlay. After a scramble the Irishman is able to clock Gunner with the shillelagh with the official distracted once again. This is enough for the win. After the bell out comes "the little bastard," as JBL calls him, who is slammed on Scott and then kicked back under the ring!
WINNER: Regal & Finlay
In the GM's office Booker says he's already had his match with Lashley, but Teddy Long disagrees and orders Book to face Lashley one on one tonight.
Chavo Guerrero comes out to the ring and is being asked by Michael Cole if he will come out of retirement. Chavo is considering coming back when Mark Henry interrupts and makes his way down the ramp. Henry runs down Chavo and all of his recent victims on Smackdown. Guerrero raises his fist at Henry and then The World's Strongest Man attacks, squashing Chavo with two powerslams.
Backstage Ashley and Michelle are arguing about whose body is better. Ashley eventually punks out Michelle and she walks away.
Match 4: Vito vs. Scott Right
The dress-wearing Vito is viciously assaulting Right. Vito is hitting some stiff kicks to the face along with some devastating clotheslines. Finally Vito nails a spinning DDT followed up by a sitdown modified chicken wing with Right's head underneath the dress! Scott taps out and that's all she wrote.
Match 5: King Booker T w/ Queen Sharmell vs. Bobby Lashley
King Booker comes out with his Queen and sits in the throne while the United States Champion Bobby Lashley limps out. The injured knee, from Finlay's attack earlier in the show, is still feeling the effects as Booker jumps him before the bell rings. Every time Lashley tries to go on the offence, Booker goes right after that left knee. The U.S. champ starts to turn things around until he misses a spear and flies to the outside once again hurting the bandaged leg. Following a brief flurry, King Booker connects with a Book End for a near fall. This match has been given plenty of time and is getting Lashley over as an against all odds warrior. Out of nowhere Lashley gets a hold of Book and nails the British Bulldog style powerslam and picks up the three count. The program goes off the air with Booker sitting in the ring with his crown on his head having a fit.
