Smackdown: Further burying the champ
By ANDY McNAMARA - SLAM! Wrestling
Judgment Day is approaching rapidly and it will be just that for several Smackdown Superstars this Sunday. JBL has promised Rey Mysterio yet another hellish evening tonight; can the Heavyweight champ overcome Bradshaw's challenge? Plus, will The Undertaker make a move on The Great Khali, or does the giant have The Dead Man's number? Albuquerque, New Mexico knows the answers and now you will too! On to the report.
JBL rides out on his limo to start the show off and talks about how he's going to beat Mysterio just like he beat Eddie. He also promises Rey that he will never forget tonight.
Match 1: MNM vs. Paul London, Brian Kendrick, & Jillian Hall
The two divas try racing at each other before the bell rings, but their respective partners drag them apart. Following the commercial action is underway with Kendrick grounding Nitro in a headlock. After some double teaming, MNM has gained control putting the beat down on Kendrick. With the referee distracted Melina makes her presence felt with a leaping head scissors from the apron. Finally the rival divas get their hands on one another and surprisingly the wrestling isn't all that terrible. The crowd is really into this match, and the finish comes when Jillian delivers a cross body off of the top rope onto Melina. This is five times in a row that Kendrick and London have in one way or another defeated MNM.
WINNERS: London, Kendrick, Jillian Hall
A taped promo from Kurt Angle is played where he explains that Mark Henry has been bitter ever since the 1996 Olympics when he won gold and Henry went home empty handed. Angle describes how he is going to defeat Henry this Sunday at Judgment Day.
Match 2: Bobby Lashley vs. Jared Steel
Oh Jared, what have you gotten yourself into? Well as of late it wouldn't be the WWE without one obvious squash match. Lashley is tuning up for his King Of The Ring final contest against Booker T at Judgment Day, and is making it look easy. Lashley puts Steel away with what appears to be his new finisher, the spear. When the big man goes to sit in the throne on the ramp Booker T runs out and the two yell at one another but do not come to blows.
Match 3: Finlay & Booker T vs. Chris Benoit & Gunner Scott
Finlay versus Chris Benoit has just been announced for Judgment Day. Gunner Scott is being picked apart by both Booker and Finlay, with Benoit having yet to get into the matchup. Finally Benoit gets the hot tag and proceeds to chop the daylights out of the Irishman. After the commercials the momentum switches back and forth until Finlay nails Benoit with a vicious shillelagh shot to the chest behind the ref's back. Booker is in full control when Sharmell points out that Lashley has come out and is sitting on the throne. With this distraction Gunner is able to apply the crucifix and pick up the win.
WINNERS: Chris Benoit & Gunner Scott
Davairi is in the ring, shows some highlights from Taker's career and then the decimation by The Great Khali. Khali comes out and babbles something not understandable.
Match 4: Mark Henry vs. Matt Hardy
Hardy comes out to the biggest pop of the night so far yet continues to be stuck at the bottom of the card. This one won't be pretty. Hardy holds his own early on, but soon enough Henry begins the pounding. The World's Strongest Man catches Hardy in a cross body and converts it into the powerslam for the 1-2-3. Following the bell, Henry splashes Hardy in the corner, then grabs the mic and tells Kurt Angle he will finish him at Judgment Day.
WINNER: Mark Henry
Nunzio and Vito are backstage talking about going out on the town. Vito leaves and Paul Burchill says he saw Vito dressed as a woman in a grocery line earlier...similar to Orlando Jordan's story last week. Nunzio says he's nuts and storms off.
Match 5: Main Event - Rey Mysterio vs. ???
JBL comes out to the announce table to wait for Mysterio's surprise opponent. Bradshaw tells Rey his opponent is...KANE! Bradshaw tricked Rey into saying "May 19", out comes Kane and The Big Red Machine is taking it to the champ. Mysterio's nose is busted open, and yet again the World Champion is being decimated. The lights go red and Kane's old mask appears on the screen and is speaking to him. Kane is showing anguish in his face and JBL makes the mistake of saying "May 19" when he's trying to motivate him to finish off Mysterio. Kane chokeslams Bradshaw leaving both the U.S. and World title holders laid out. JBL and Mysterio will have to settle their differences this Sunday at Judgment Day for the World Heavyweight Title.
WINNER: No Contest
