Cena marching to WrestleMania
By ANDY McNAMARA - SLAM! Wrestling
Tonight Raw is Canada! That's right, no dog show is going to interrupt Raw from Greensboro, North Carolina in the Great White North and what a jam-packed show it is. The #1 Contender Semi-Finals for the WWE Championship will answer some questions along with a giant main event with Edge versus John Cena. Don't forget Mick Foley is the special referee for that WWE title match, so without any further ado, on to the report!
Match 1: #1 Contender for the WWE Championship, Semi-Finals: Big Show vs. Triple H
Big Show attacks the Cerebral Assassin, demonstrating incredible strength with a gorilla press slam and high impact wrist slams. This is the best I've seen the big man look in some time. Triple H turns the momentum by pushing Show into the steel ring post on the outside. He's busted wide open! After The Game reverses a choke slam into a DDT he scores a near fall with an awkwardly applied Pedigree. Triple H narrowly escapes defeat from a huge choke slam with a foot on the bottom rope. The two warriors battle on the outside and the referee calls for a double countout. The action continues until Big Show destroys The Game by spearing him through the barricade, rendering Triple H unconscious.
WINNER: Double Countout
Back in the locker room Vince is speaking with lawyers when Todd Grisham asks about the Triple H/Big Show result. Vince declares that next week it'll be a triple threat match with Big Show, The Game, and the Masters/RVD winner. Shelton Benjamin and his Mama asked McMahon for an Intercontinental Championship match. Vince says that if Benjamin defeats Eugene tonight then he will become the #1 contender for the I.C. title.
Next, Mick Foley is in a locker room singing the WrestleMania 22 theme song when Edge and Lita interrupt. Lita tries to influence Foley with phoney compliments, but Edge becomes frustrated and threatens the Hardcore Legend to favour him in the title match. Foley essentially states that as special referee he's going to call it down the middle in the Edge/Cena main event tonight.
Match 2: #1 Contender for I.C. Championship- Shelton Benjamin vs. Eugene
Eugene brings down Valentine's Day chocolates to the ring and offers some to Mama Benjamin. Mama declines and Shelton pounces, giving him the early advantage. Eugene mounts some brief offence when Shelton hits the T-Bone Suplex out of nowhere for the pinfall. Mr. Benjamin grabs the mic and informs us that he will face Ric Flair for the I.C. title next week.
WINNER: Shelton Benjamin
Match 3: Ashley vs. Torrie Wilson w/Candice Michelle
Well this one will certainly not be a scientific classic. Torrie jumps Ashley and then Wilson rubs her dog's behind in the Diva contest winner's face! In about three minutes Ashley rolls up Torrie and gets the win. Candice announces that she will be on the cover of Playboy on March 10, and Torrie looks slightly put off ... I smell a feud brewing.
It is now time for the Mandatory Shawn Michaels Retirement Party. Clips of HBK bothering McMahon over the years have been playing all night and now Vince and Shawn are in the ring. Vince mocks Michaels and then brings out The Spirit Squad to give a cheer for HBK. There were some microphone troubles so the cheer looked and sounded terrible. Michaels says he doesn't want to retire so McMahon cuts his mic and demands that he sign the retirement papers. HBK sits down to "sign" then puts the pen down and shakes his head at Vince. The Show Stopper grabs the mic from Vince and says he's not walking away. McMahon tells Michaels he's jealous of Michaels that he knows what he wants, he has inner peace, and Vince wants it. HBK rips up the contract in McMahon's face, and Vince slaps him. As Michaels over turns the table McMahon high tails it and tells Shawn that he has opened the flood gates of Hell.
The first inductee to this year's Hall of Fame is ... BRET "HITMAN" HART!!! I don't believe it, the unthinkable has happened. Hopefully the fact the induction is happening on April Fool's Day is not a terrible omen.
Match 4: #1 Contender for the WWE Championship, Semi-Finals: RVD vs. Chris Masters
The crowd has been dead all night long and is noticeable once again at the start of this match. Masters clotheslined RVD from the ring apron over the barricade in an amazing looking spot. Some back and forth action but Van Dam looks to still be shaking off some ring rust. After jostling for position on the top rope, RVD is able to crescent kick Masters off the turnbuckle and deliver the Five Star Frog Splash to earn his way to the tournament final.
Trish's boyfriend, Jack, goes to bring her flowers in the dressing room and finds Mickie James in a blonde wig. Mickie tries hitting on Jack and then screams for help pretending that he is hurting her. Security pulls the surprised Jack from the room. After the commercial Mickie is crying and Trish runs in to comfort her. Mickie is making up stories and the security guard backs up M.J.'s claims.
WWE Championship w/ Special Referee Mick Foley, John Cena (c) vs. Edge w/Lita
Edge and Cena are exchanging the advantage with submission holds and pounding. Foley catches Lita trying to untie the top turnbuckle and ejects her from ringside. The crowd is alive now and Edge is livid. During the commercial break Edge regained control by back dropping Cena onto the barricade. The Rated R Superstar is able to reverse the top rope Samoan Drop into a power bomb and goes for the pin with his feet on the ropes. Foley catches him and Edge shoves the ref who pushes back. Edge gets out of the FU and turns it into a DDT; he gets out of the FU once more and hits Cena into Foley. While Mick is down the champ slaps Edge into the STFU and has Edge tapping, but Foley is out of the ring. Lita runs in, hits Cena, then gives Edge the belt to nail the champ for a near fall. The finish comes when Cena catches Edge out of a cross body, muscles him up and delivers the FU for the 1-2-3.
WINNER: John Cena
After Cena clears the ring Lita low blows Foley from behind and Edge spears The Hardcore Legend. Mick is squirming on the mat as the show goes off the air.
