Birthday belt for Masters?
By TIM BAINES - Ottawa Sun
Chris Mordetsky hopes for the ultimate birthday present at tonight's New Year's Revolution: The WWE heavyweight title currently strapped to John Cena's waist.
Mordetsky, who wrestles as Chris Masters, turns 23 today ... and he's one of the contestants in the pay-per-view's main event -- an Elimination Chamber match featuring Masters, Shawn Michaels, Kane, Carlito and Kurt Angle, all looking to relieve Cena of his belt.
"It'd be a great birthday present," says Masters. "I'm already setting up a party."
The nature of the match hasn't eluded Masters. The "structure from hell" is bound to leave at least a couple of the wrestlers with some scrapes and bruises.
"I hear it's brutal, I don't know what to expect," says Masters. "It's very unforgiving, but I'm looking forward to it."
As Chris Masters, the 6-foot-5, 280-lb. Mordetsky has more than a touch of arrogance, but out of the ring he's a much different character.
"You're not going to write this, are you? My girlfriend says I'm pretty much the complete opposite. I'm just a simple guy.
"Sure, I have a confident side to me. But I grew up opposite to what you see on TV. I'm down to earth."
Masters says he knew at age 15 or 16, he had found what he wanted to do with his life: Become a wrestler. His favourite wrestler at the time: Shawn Michaels.
"Shawn Michaels was a guy who delivered a pay-per-view quality match every time he went out there," says Masters, who loved working against his childhood hero.
"It was time for the young lion to step up and the old lion to step down," says Masters with a laugh.
More on Chris Masters
It'll be home sweet home as Rage Wrestling Entertainment holds its Odyssey card on Jan. 13 at the Rockland District High School gym at 7 p.m. -- a fundraiser to send the school's rugby club to England in March. The card: Mr. Know it All Shawn Demers vs. Frank "The Beast" Bradley; Impact Eddie Osbourne vs. Tray Hugh Mongus; Dave Titan vs. Damian Styles; Misty Haven vs. 21st Century Fox; Prince of Persia Raheem Ali vs. The Freak Zakk Manson; Drake Styles vs. MVP Michael Von Payton (lumberjack match). Demers, Von Payton and Misty Haven all went to RDHS. RWE also has a show lined up for Jan. 15 at the Royal Canadian Legion on Maloney Blvd. in Gatineau. The group is hoping to have monthly shows in Gatineau, with an occasional show in Ontario.
Here's the rest of the card for tonight's New Year's Revolution: Big Show vs.Triple H; Ric Flair vs. Edge; Gregory Helms vs. Jerry "The King" Lawler; Trish Stratus vs. Mickie James; and Victoria vs. Ashley vs. Maria vs. Torrie Wilson vs. Candice Michelle (Bra and Panties Gauntlet match). Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer says Mae Young and Fabulous Moolah will be in Albany for the pay-per-view. Please, ladies ... don't let the puppies loose.
WWE has signed another giant -- Dalip Giant Singh, who measures in at more than seven feet. And, out the door is Juventud, who was released.
Shelton Benjamin's "Mama" is none other than Thea Vidale, who had her own sitcom, Thea in 1993. She's appeared in many other TV shows.
None better than Rowdy Roddy Piper to interview The Boogeyman in Piper's Pit on Smackdown! The Boogeyman character really seems to be over with fans ... much to the chagrin of Jillian Hall, who got had some of The Boogeyman's worms stuffed down her panties.
Stacy Keibler scored 22 out of 30 in the season premier of Dancing with the Stars. The WWE diva placed behind Drew Lachey, Giselle Fernandez and Tatum O'Neal. Master P Miller was in last place with 12 points.
WWE is expected to release a second Ric Flair DVD. One word for that: Woooooooooooooo!
Mark Henry might need a little more work learning how to break into a steel cage.
