Jericho a McCartney fan
By London Free Press Staff

As a pro wrestler, Chris Jericho has met many tough guys in the ring.

But when it comes to his rock life as frontman for metal band Fozzy, there's one man he acknowledges as the undisputed champ -- Paul McCartney.

"This 63-year old guy . . . he was heavier than Metallica," Jericho says after seeing his hero during McCartney's recent tour. It was as if McCartney was tossing out a challenge, the way a pro grappler might. "He was saying, 'Check me out.'"

Jericho brings Fozzy to the Embassy tonight. Also on the bill are Papa Fogals Chair and Reason Disappears.

Jericho, whose real name is Chris Irvine, formed the band in 1999. "The biggest difference is (music) is the real deal," he says. In addition to McCartney and the Beatles, he mentions Iron Maiden, Metallica, Black Sabbath, Slayer and System of a Down as influences.

Fozzy is touring to support its recent CD, All that Remains (Ash Records/KOCH).

Fozzy is his full-time performing life just now. Jericho grew up in Winnipeg before becoming a star with the U.S.-based WWE. He is out of the ring after being "fired" from the WWE by GM Eric Bischoff. With his contract up, Jericho vowed to grapple only in the WWE if he returned to the ring. There is already buzz in pro wrestling circles that a new deal may be in the works.

Tickets for tonight's show at the 732 Dundas St. club are $20. Doors open at 9 p.m. Call 434-6604.
