Christian show brings out the big names
By CHRIS SOKOL - SLAM! Wrestling

On November 11th, WWE star "The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels will be once again returning to "The Barber Shop" to confront Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake. However, this will not take place in a WWE ring, but rather a church.

With two shows over the next couple of months at the Upper Room World Center in Deer Park, NY, Power Wrestling Alliance (PWA) will be making inroads into New York City for the first time. It's a plan that has been five years in the making, said one of the men behind the PWA, Bobby Reidel. "The PWA will go wherever we get asked to go, but we are a sponsored event." explained Reidel. "We need supporters to bring us in. We have wanted to come to New York for the past five years, it's been a back and forth process and the wheels are finally in motion."

The promotion has a show booked for September 23rd at the Upper Room World Center, 722 Deer Park Ave., entitled Rock-N-Wrestle 2005. Admission is free, and matches are scheduled include Osirus vs Justyn Glory; Jamie Van Leamer vs Chris Forza; Joe Sloan vs Samir Ahmed II; Johnny Ova vs Xavier; Demolition Blast vs Kamala w/ Kimchee. The music will be provided by Underground Activity.

But it's the November 11th stacked card with WWE talents Shawn Michaels, The Big Show and current road agent "The Million Dollar Man" Ted Dibiase that has people talking. "Shawn worked on a previous PWA show in Detroit, Michigan, while this will be The Big Show's debut. We welcome The Show with open arms and expect to see him make a 'Big' impact," said Reidel.

Michaels' famous heel turn against Rockers partner Marty Jannetty came on the set of one of Beefcake's Barber Shops, with HBK sending Jannetty through the glass window.

PWA is a Christian wrestling company that has been making waves across America and even into parts of Canada, most notably Toronto last year on what was Road Warrior Hawk's last appearance. While wrestling is the primary focus of the event, there are other parts of the show that aren't wrestling related. "I predict that people will walk in expecting one thing, but will walk out with a better understanding of what it is we do," explained Reidel. "The fans of wrestling will love it no matter what."

The match scheduled for the top of the marquee is a Ladder Match, pitting "Ted Dibiase's Million Dollar Protege" Johnny Ova against "The High Flying" Teddy Hart. "The 'Internet fans' will enjoy this match because it should be nothing less than spectacular," said Reidel. "Both men are extremely athletic and impressive in their own unique ways. I believe that their styles will mix well."

As of press time, three other matches are scheduled to take place, including a tag team legends Match featuring Tito Santana and "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan against The Dream Team (Greg "The Hammer" Valentine and Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake), Demolition Blast will take on "The Ugandan Giant" Kamala with Kimchee, as well as the first ever women's match in a PWA Ring, as Luna Vachon takes on one of New York's Glamour Girls.

But from what Reidel told SLAM! Wrestling, there is a still a stacked card of legends on the list that are awaiting their placement on the show, which leads him to believe the 3,000 seat venue will be packed to the rafters. "For fans who are planning to attend, get your tickets early, this will be a sell-out event. There will be many surprises on the show, smoke and lighting effects, dazzling entrances and of course, great action. Entertainment is key, athletic ability is a must. Every style of wrestling will be touched on and all who attend will be effected by the event in various ways. In many ways, the fans are a part of the show, they play a direct role in 'The Main Event'."

Chris Sokol will be attending this show on behalf of SLAM! Wrestling.
