Impact: It's all about the X Division
By CHRIS SOKOL - SLAM! Wrestling
Last week the X Division Tournament kicked off and Rhyno made his Impact debut. The X Division Tournament was a superb idea and may have really added some extra interest to this month's offering of TNA Impact episodes. This week the tournament rolls on with the final two quarterfinal matches.
Impact begins with the normal rundown of what happened on last week's episode.
Match One -- Shark Boy vs "Primetime" Elix Skipper vs "The Original Playa From The Himalayas" Sonjay Dutt
These three men utilized the "Three Way Dance Rules" to their advantage, always incorporating all three men. Sometimes these matches turn into one-on-one matches with the third man just taking a breather. Skipper debuted his "New Edge", but was knocked off the ring apron by Dutt, who followed up by planting Shark Boy on the mat for the three count.
Winner Via Pinfall -- "The Original Playa From The Himalayas" Sonjay Dutt
We were then sent backstage where we saw Larry Zybysko chatting with BG James who is given a referee shirt, and is told that he will referee the tag match at Sacrifice between 3 Live Kru and Kip James & "The Alpha Male" Monty Brown.
Match Two -- Quarterfinal Match For The Super X Cup - Alex Shelly vs Shocker
Excellent match right here, Alex Shelly is a talent unlike any other, with, as MIke Tenay and Don West say, "A unique style". He gets more an more impressive with each outing. Shelly kept Shocker on the defensive, utlizing a host of lucha libre moves, finishing Shocker off with his own cradle pin type finisher.
Winner Via Pinfall -- Alex Shelly
Backstage, Father James Mitchell with Abyss cut a promo on how TNA can not stop Abyss. He said that he and Abyss have nothing against Lance Hoyt, he was just in the way, and he won't be the last one. Abyss does indeed deserve that title belt.
Match Three -- Cassidy Riley vs Mikey Batts
Riley came out dressed like Raven, part of his new gimmick of emulating Raven. Riley showed off his Raven move set before Rhino and Jeff Jarrett came down, ending with Rhino goring both men and delivering Rhino Driver to Batts before Raven came out. Raven said that since he has no friends, an enemy would have to do. The lights went out and when they came back on, Sabu was in the ring with a steel chair which he hit Jarrett and Rhino with before doing his patented moonsault on "The Man Beast". It's now two-on-two.
Winner -- No Contest
Match Four -- Matt Bentley w/ Traci Brooks vs " The Tennesee Cowboy" James Storm w/ "Wildcat" Chris Harris
Bentley dominated the match, with little assistance from Traci. Harris stayed quiet and failed to get involved even once. Both men attempted to go for their superkicks, but both times were reversed. Storm ended it with that Cowboy Riding spinning inverted reverse DDT that he hasn't really given a name for.
Winner Via Pinfall -- "The Tennesee Cowboy" James Storm
Shane Douglas stood backstage with "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles who at risk of sounding cocky said that maybe he made the X Division. He complimented Chris Sabin and Petey Williams on being excellent athletes, but said they both had a chance to see why they call him "Phenomenal".
Match Five -- Quarterfinal Match In The Super X Cup Tournament -- Petey Williams w/ A-1 vs Chris Sabin
Another excellent match, these two men really showcase how great the other man can be. "The Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels joined Mike Tenay and Don West on commentary for this one, which saw Sabin hit the Cradle Shock, but the referee was distracted by A-1, WIlliams then took the hockey stick, hit Sabin in the stomach and followed up with a Canadian Destroyer for the win, as Petey Williams advances into the semifinals of the Super X Cup Tournament.
Winner Via Pinfall -- Petey Williams
Another Impact dominated by the X Division, but that's not a bad thing. The X Division seems to be TNA's bread and butter as it cools the cravings for all types of fans. There are plenty of highspots, while at the same time plenty of mat wrestling, mixed with Lucha Libre, Japanese and European wrestling. Great Impact that showcased one of the main reasons that TNA is where they are at.
