Impact: On the road to the Super X Cup
By CHRIS SOKOL - SLAM! Wrestling

TNA and Spike TV have signed the contract and sealed the deal. In October, TNA Wrestling will be moving its Impact show from the computer screen back to the TV screen. But for now, however, we need to focus on this week's edition of Impact which features the first round of action for the Super X Cup.

The show opened with a recap of the Jeff Jarrett/Raven/Abyss/Rhyno deal. It was a good match, but Rhyno should have just come out of the crowd as a surprise, rather than be announced earlier in the evening.

Match One - David Young vs Lance Hoyt

Young attacked Hoyt on the outside, but once the action got into the ring, Hoyt took control. Abyss came out with Father James Mitchell and destroyed Young and Hoyt, delivering a backbreaker to Young and The Black Hole Slam to Hoyt. Mitchell grabbed a mic and said this was a foreshadowing of things to come, claiming that Abyss was a Weapon of Mass Destruction and he had the detonator. He told TNA to be ready for more explosions.

Winner - No Contest

Match Two - First Round Match In The Super X Cup Tournament - "The Samoan Submission Machine" Samoa Joe vs "The Original Playa From The Himalayas" Sonjay Dutt

"The Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels provided commentary for this match. Joe brutalized Dutt, except for one little offensive flurry that ended in a tope from Dutt. After some more chops from Dutt, Joe fired back, locked in the Kikeda Clutch, forcing Dutt to tap out. After the match, "The Franchise" Shane Douglas tried to get a word with Joe who just stared him down and walked away.

Winner Via Submission - "The Samoan Submission Machine" Samoa Joe

Backstage, Jerry Lynn and Sean Waltman argued, leading to them setting up a match between themselves at Sacrifice.

Match Three - Kip James and "The Alpha Male" Monty Brown vs Sonny Siaki and Apolo

BG James was out on the entrance ramp to watch this all go down. James shoved referee Mark "Slick" Johnson down, then sent Siaki in for the POOOOUNCE! Senior official Rudy Charles came down and counted the three count. Ron "The Truth" Killings and Konnan came out an wild brawl ensued, setting up a rematch at Sacrifice.

Winners Via Pinfall - Kip James and "The Alpha Male" Monty Brown

Backstage, "The Franchise" Shane Douglas caught up with Simon Diamond who was yelling at David Young, saying that he should take his guidance, because without him, Young would have more matches to lose. The two men shook hands and will continue their alliance.

Clips of the referees getting knocked out at No Surrender are shown, followed by the referees saying that they will not work the rematch between Kip James, "The Alpha Male" Monty Brown, Ron "The Truth" Killings and Konnan. They all leave, leaving Zybysko with no referee. I think he better "Calllll Somebodyyy."

The NWA World Champion Raven came out and said that TNA wasn't big enough for both him and Jeff Jarrett. Jarrett came out and talked, he told Raven to turn around, Rhino went for the Gore, he missed it, Jarrett came in the ring, the double teaming ensued with Raven getting Gored and beaten down in a Figure Four Leg Lock. Where was Cassidy Riley?!

Match Four - First Round in Super X Tournament - Matt Bently w/ Traci Brooks vs "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles

Due to legal issues, Michael Shane is no more, and he is now Matt Bently. Great match right here that saw Shane working the arm of Styles for almost the entire match. Styles hit The Pele. Traci tried to get involved, but America's Most Wanted came down. James Storm got in the ring while the referee was distracted and superkicked Matt Bently with a cowboy boot for the three count.

Winner Via Pinfall - "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles

Impact has seemed weighed down all of sudden. Maybe they are taking a break since they have signed a TV deal. Prior to the deal being signed, these Impact shows were phenomenal, but since the deal has been in place, things seem a little slower. Hopefully they can turn this around and deliver big on the Internet, before reaping the benefits of being on Spike TV.
