WWE plans to promote its legends
By JON WALDMAN - SLAM! Wrestling
Everything old is new again for World Wrestling Entertainment. The Stamford, CT. based wrestling company has announced plans for a new initiative to highlight its past superstars through products, events and broadcasts. Through its corporate website, WWE announced that 25 talents have signed on to be part of the new WWE Legends initiative. The initiative will formally kick off with the Greatest Wrestling Stars of the 80s DVD, and will continue with other home video recordings, as well as action figures, books, apparel and appearances to promote WWE 24/7. WWE also noted that fantasy weekends are in the works. "WWE has a tremendous heritage on television, in the licensing industry, at retail and, most importantly, with our fans," said Donna Goldsmith, Senior Vice President, Consumer Products in a release on corporate.wwe.com. "Our fans have been clamoring for us to do more with their favorite wrestlers of the past, and the WWE Legends initiative is intended to do just that." "Superstar" Billy Graham, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper and current Raw commentator Jerry "The King" Lawler were named in the release.
In recent years, WWE has released a variety of figurines in the Classic
Superstars line, including past names like Jake "The Snake" Roberts and
Yokozuna, as well as current roster talent such as Shawn Michaels and Ric Flair.
There have also been DVDs created commemorating stars of the past, the most
being The Road Warriors: The Life and Death of the Most Dominant Tag-Team in
Wrestling History.
