Kid Nichols headed to Puerto Rico
By DOUG MCINTYRE - Cochrane Times

Kid Nichols

Cochrane, Alberta pro wrestler Devon "Kid Nichols" Nicholson admitted to disappointment after what was likely his final hurrah with Stampede Wrestling last Saturday ended on a losing note.

The 280-pound grappler lost his no-disqualification rematch with archrival Karnage at Totem Arena. The contest was a sequel to an April bout in Cochrane that ended in a double-DQ.

Being as last Saturday's fight was an anything-goes affair, the 320-pound behemoth Karnage engaged in plenty of ring skullduggery.

"Six of the bad guys came out and interfered and it really cost me," said Nicholson.

"Someone passed him a chain... and he was using a fork on me throughout the match so I was bleeding badly."

Although the show was sparsely attended compared to the last time Stampede Wrestling slammed its way into town, Nicholson added hometown fans were raucous in their support.

"The fans that were there were great; they were really into my match."

Although his Stampede stint ended in a defeat, the 22-year-old bruiser has plenty of mat wars on the horizon.

This Friday he departs for a three-month stint in Puerto Rico, where the popularity of wrestling typically draws big crowds.

"I'd been talking to a promoter down there for a couple months and they want me to be a real bad guy there," he said.

"I found a videotape of a match where I was being really mean and sent it to them. Two days later, they called me back and they were definitely interested," chuckled Nicholson, who's also scheduled to wrestle in Japan in September.

Nicholson also recently auditioned for Vince McMahon's World Wrestling Entertainment with a May 31 match in Edmonton, which was broadcast three days later on the TV program Smackdown.

"It was just a fast match but the agents liked it and told me to call them when I get back from Puerto Rico," he said.
