Daddy Hugo set to get into ring
By TIM BAINES - Ottawa Sun

Hugo Girard is wearing a big smile this week. Certainly not because he's walking around on crutches after tearing an Achilles tendon last month in Columbus, Ohio, at a strongman competition.

But his wife Nadine gave birth to a baby, Tyler, who weighed in at nearly seven pounds, on Friday night .

The former World's Strongest Man is a proud papa, to say the least.

He's got another reason to have a little jump in his step.

He's making his in-ring wrestling debut May 14 at CPW's BattleMania. Not as a wrestler. But as a ref.

"I used to watch it. Stone Cold. Undertaker. The Rock," says 33-year-old Girard.

Could Girard haul his monster body into the ring and wrestle?

"I'm too involved as a strongman," he says. "I don't believe you can do two things at 100%. By the time I'm 35 or 36, it'll be time to move on ... and in the future, who knows?"

The crutches serve as a painful reminder of his injury.

"It was the hammer lift. Eight hundred pounds," says Girard. "I was pushing and I heard a pop. At first, I thought my foot went through the floor. It was my tendon. It didn't really hurt."

After surgery in Ottawa, he got the cast off after three weeks, five weeks sooner than he was supposed to. He hopes to compete in the world's strongest man events again in August.

"I'm going to get rid of the crutches so I can walk around with the baby in my arms," he says.

- The more things change, the more they stay the same. Stone Cold Steve Austin is back. At least periodically, we hope. So, apparently, is Rowdy Roddy Piper, who told a United Kingdom TV show that he has a five-year deal with WWE. And so is Hulk Hogan, perhaps set to team with Shawn Michaels to face Muhammad Hassan and Daivari at the Backlash pay-per-view. Expect to see Hogan on tomorrow night's RAW, where he'll announce that he'll accept Michaels' invitation.

- First it was Rhyno. Then developmental guys Aaron Aguilera (Jesus) and Chilly Willy. Then Matt Hardy. And now Molly Holly (Nora Greenwald). WWE has chopped away at its roster, releasing the five wrestlers. Oh, and Percy Pringle (Paul Bearer) was also let go. We had not seen him since he was killed off in a storyline. I never thought Rhyno was used properly. Anyone who saw him wrestle in ECW would see him as a talent, a guy who could have been used as a wrecking machine -- huge heel material. Why wouldn't WWE at least keep him until the June ECW reunion? Matt Hardy, well there's a situation with Edge and Lita that I won't get into. But there's no question Matt's got talent. And Molly Holly was one of the more talented WWE diva wrestlers. A lady wrestler who hadn't gotten much of a chance lately other than a match on RAW this past week. It's a puzzling loss to the ladies division, one that WWE seems to care less and less about. Molly and Victoria (Lisa Marie Varon), when given the chance, always performed well. The released wrestlers cannot compete anywhere else for 90 days, but if I were TNA, I'd swoop in and grab Matt to reunite him with his brother Jeff.

- Loved seeing The Hurricane get a little more air time on RAW. Just wish he didn't have to get squashed by Triple H. And speaking of Triple H, he'll face good ole J.R. on RAW tomorrow night. Got to think Batista gets involved.

- We're due for a RAW draft lottery soon. And let's hope it's executed than the last snoozer. Whatever they do, Michaels should move to Smackdown! to jumpstart his feud with Kurt Angle. A guy like Snitsky should also make the move. And I'd love to see The Big Show on RAW.
