WrestleMania 21: Breaking down the numbers
By JON WALDMAN -- SLAM! Wrestling

Now that WrestleMania is in the books, we can all look back at this year's edition of the "showcase of the immortals" in a statistical light.

Yes, it's once again time for the Wrestlemania Stats Pack, and the quirks that emerged from the Staples Center this past weekend are definitely noteworthy. Here's a few of the more interesting facts about WrestleMania 21.

  • Evidenced by the small number of wrestlers competing at 'Mania this year, only two individuals made their 'Mania debuts. Christy Hemme is the only WWE roster talent that was a rookie, while Akebono also be debuted.
  • Akebono is not the first Japanese import to work 'Mania. For WrestleMania VII, Tenryu and Kitao were brought in to face Demolition. They won that bout.
  • Akebono had another stat working in his favour. Big Show has yet to win a match at 'Mania. With Sunday's loss, Show falls to 0-6 in WM matches.
  • The Show/Akebono match was the first "non-pro-wrestling" match in 'Mania's history since Butterbean vs. Bart Gunn in a Brawl For All (MMA) match at WrestleMania XV.
  • Batista and John Cena became the first wrestlers to win their first Heavyweight Titles at 'Mania since "Stone Cold" Steve Austin captured the then-WWF World Heavyweight Title at WM XIV. Chris Benoit, who won his first WWE Heavyweight Title last year, previously held the WCW Heavyweight Title.
  • Cena is the only wrestler in WWE's history to win the top-level title after winning a secondary title the year prior. Last year, Cena defeated Big Show for the U.S. title.
  • Cena is not the first, however, to compete in such matches. Randy "Macho Man" Savage lost his Intercontinental Title at WM III, but gained the Heavyweight Championship at WM IV, while Bret Hart won the Intercontinental Title at WM VIII and lost the World Heavyweight Title at WM IX and Shawn Michaels lost his IC title and Heavyweight Title bouts in consecutive 'Manias (WM X and WM XI).
  • This is only the second WrestleMania where the tag titles were not on the line. The first was WM XII.
  • Triple H is now the first man to lose a Heavyweight Title match in consecutive years.
  • Triple H has now competed in four consecutive Heavyweight Title matches, which is now the longest in 'Mania's history. The next longest is Hulk Hogan, who competed in three-straight top-level title bouts from WM V to WM WM VII.
  • Hogan still holds the record for most Heavyweight Title matches at 'Mania with six bouts (WM II, WM III, WM V-WM VII, WM IX). Triple H is next on the list with five (WM XVIII-WM XXI), then Shawn Michaels with four (WM XXI, WM XXII, WM XIV, WM XX).
  • Undertaker's match on Sunday puts him in sole possession (pardon the pun) of the most WrestleMania matches. He had previously shared that distinction with Hogan.
  • Undertaker has still only main-evented one WrestleMania (WM XVIII vs. Sycho Sid).
  • Eddy Guererro is the first wrestler to go from a main-event match to the opening bout for 'Mania since Lex Luger (WM X, WM XI).
  • Edge has now won more ladder-style matches than anyone at WrestleMania. He and Christian shared that honour, having won consecutive matches (triple threat tag-team Ladder Match at WM XVI, TLC at WM XVII).
  • This year's Wrestlemania featured the fewest amount of title bouts since Wrestlemania XIII, which also had three. Then again, at that point there were only three active WWE titles.
  • The 'Mania with the fewest title bouts, of course, was WM XII, which featured the Iron Man match between Bret Hart and Michaels for the WWF Heavyweight Title.
