Impact: Skipper scores in shootout
By CHRIS SOKOL - SLAM! Wrestling
Can a 30-minute X-Division Shoot Out Match carry a 60-minute show? Will A.J. be able to stop Abyss? Will Impact be any good this week? How long until Lockdown anyway? Will the questions ever end? Yep. The show kicks off with a recap of the Waltman/DDP/Nash/Jarrett/Brown/Outlaw saga. Probably the most on-the-fly feud TNA has built, but hey, it looks as though it's going to work. Mike Tenay and Don West jabber a bit and announce that at Lockdown, A.J. Styles will fight Abyss in Six Sides of Steel. Whoo Hoo. The winner of the match will receive an NWA World Heavyweight Title Shot. This is TNA realizing the fans want Styles to be champ; they legitimately hate Jarrett, and this is TNA figuring that out, and once again defying storylines. For those who remember, Abyss beat Jeff Hardy to earn a title shot.
Match One- Abyss vs Cassidy Riley West and Tenay hype a five-way X Division Shoot Out to see who faces Chris Daniels at Lockdown for the X Division Title, and then send us to a video package highlighting the history between "Primetime" Elix Skipper and "The Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels. Can you say Match of the Year Candidate? If you are looking at the paragraph funny, yeah, they hyped a number one contender's match, and then put on a promo stating Elix Skipper would be the number one contender. That's a smooth move. Next, we are shown an interview Mike Tenay did with "The Alpha Male" Monty Brown earlier in the day. He really is the second coming of The Rock. He is almost a carbon copy, he's on his way to cutting better promos, a.k.a ones that don't depict him to be a babbling idiot. If he stays on this track, I see big things for him. Moving on, Brown talks about doing whatever he wants, whenever he wants. Best promo for him to date. Following that, another video package on the Waltman/DDP/Nash/Jarrett/Brown/Outlaw saga.
Match Two- Four-Man X Division Shoot Out No.1 Contenders Match- Chris Sabin vs Michael Shane vs "Primetime" Elix Skipper vs Petey Williams w/ Coach Scott D'Amore, Bobby Roode, and A-1 Skipper and Daniels exchange words as TNA Impact comes to a close.
Horrible programming this week. The X Division match was good, but somehow, I can't get excited over five minutes of awesome action spanned out over a one-hour show. There were some spots in the X Division match that were great, but there was also a lot of down time in the match. Lockdown is shaping up to be another good TNA PPV, but Impact and storylines in general need a lot of work. As it stands now, TNA = Complete Mess.
