Slater discusses attempted murder chargeMid-Atlantic Gateway scores long interview with "Dirty" Dick
By GREG OLIVER - Producer, SLAM! Wrestling
In an interview with the Mid-Atlantic Gateway website, Dick Slater addressed his attempted murder charge for the first time, and laid the blame on the drugs he was taking for his back pain.
"It was all drug related ... most of it all. I mean, I couldnít tell you what happened ... if I didnít know what happened," Slater explained. "I really donít know what actually took place, other than I was ... I woke up in Intensive Care in the hospital. I had gone to the hospital by ambulance the night before ... "
On Tuesday, June 10, 2004, Richard Van Slater was sentenced to a year of house arrest followed by two year's probation for the stabbing of his former girlfriend. The incident took place December 27, 2003. Police reported that Slater stabbed Theresa Marie Halbert with an 8-inch butcher knife and "watched her bleed" in her home. He had been in the home to move out the last of his possessions.
In the Mid-Atlantic Gateway interview, Slater said that the night before the incident, he had been given a shot of morphine and two forty milligram Oxycontins in an ambulance and at a hospital, all in an attempt to combat pain from numerous back surgeries. He claimed that the combination of the painkillers, on top of his use of Vicodin and Klonopin and Neurontin, resulted in the attack.
"So, I was like in real bad shape. And when they did all that ... they let me out of the hospital! They put me in a friend of mineís car, and I ended up at his house. I couldnít tell you what happened from there," he said.
The interview, conducted by David Chappell, visits many other aspects of Slater's life, from his beginnings in Tampa, Florida, the various territories he worked in) focusing, obviously, on the Mid-Atlantic region), and the autobiography he's been working on.
