Campaign launched to add Stu Hart to Canada's Walk of Fame
October 16, 2004, commemorates the one-year anniversary of Canadian Wrestling Icon Stu Hart?s passing. It will also mark the official start of "A Star for Stu" A grass roots Campaign that will push for Stu Hart's induction into Canada?s Walk of Fame. Starting October 16, 2004 supporters throughout the world of "the Patriarch of Canada's first family of wrestling" will be able to log on to www.aStarForStu.com and nominate Stu for this great honor.
"The idea for this project came to me while listening to The L.A.W., a radio show that is considered to be the foremost authority on professional wrestling. They were talking about this year's inductees in to Canada's Walk of Fame. The one co-host voiced how disappointed he was that Stu Hart was not listed as one of the inductees." Recalls campaign Director, David Freitas. "I couldn?t help but share both co-hosts' feeling that Hart's exclusion from Canada?s Walk of Fame might be due in part to a stigma that some people have about professional wrestling."
"Here is a man who has entertained not only Canadians, but also the world for over 50 years. His wrestling legacy continues to live in his children, and his grandchildren. Not to mention the countless men and women he also took under his tutelage and helped form them into stars. To the world, Canada is viewed as a country that produces the greatest wrestlers in the world, and Stu Hart was largely responsible for that reputation. Stu Hart put Canada on the map. That is why I strongly believe there should be a star in Toronto celebrating Stu Hart's contributions to Canada's identity and heritage."
Hart, the patriarch of Canada's most famous wrestling family and recipient of The Order of Canada, marshaled in generations of wrestling's most unforgettable names throughout his career including Rowdy Roddy Piper, Bret "Hitman" Hart, Andre the Giant, Lance Storm and Chris Benoit. A former Director of Athletics for the Canadian Navy and later the founder of Stampede Wrestling in Calgary, Hart's loyal fans and supporters span the globe.
"A Star for Stu" website will launch October 16, 2004 at www.astarforstu.com and will allow supporters of Stu Hart the opportunity to cast a nomination for his induction to Canada's Walk of fame.
