ROH Main Event Spectacles spectacular
By JASON CLEVETT -- SLAM! Wrestling

After the November 1, 2003 Ring of Honor show at the Rexplex in Elizabeth, New Jersey talk centered strictly on the now infamous backflips of Teddy Hart after the scramble cage match. It is unfortunate that the rest of the event was overshadowed, but with RoH?s Main Event Spectacles DVD fans can see for themselves the stellar show that has three fantastic matches and a solid undercard.

The aforementioned Scramble Cage match is one of the reasons why this show is a must-buy. Five teams enter the cage with platforms on each corner, allowing the participants to take breathtaking leaps off of the cage. High fliers like Jose & Joel Maximo and Special K?s Hydro & Angel Dust are balanced out by brawlers Loc & Devito of the Carnage Crew and the more technical high impact Backseat Boyz of Trent Acid and Johnny Kashmere. This match is also notable as the "coming out party" for Jack Evans who was a relative unknown walking into the match teaming with Teddy Hart, pulling off a moonsault with two rotations off the cage to the floor -- a sight that has to be seen to be believed. The match is high impact, exciting, and fun with some truly unique and visually stunning moves.

High Impact also describes the battle between Homicide and BJ Whitmere, another stellar bout that sees both men pull it together to avoid what looks like a certain pinfall to come back. It is an intense hard fought match that makes the viewer a fan of both men by the end of it.

The main event, a highly anticipated bout between AJ Styles and American Dragon, lived up to its potential. Adding to the "special feel" is the fact that commentators Chris Lovey and Ray Murrow end their commentary at the beginning of the match and let the wrestling speak for itself. It is a wise decision, as the viewer gets to concentrate on the stellar match that unfolds without distraction. Some feel that Dragon is bland, but his personality shines through in the match, getting into a heated argument with a ringside fan. The match itself is well done, and has a number of little things that I personally love to see and not enough wrestlers do.

The non-title fatal four-way involving ROH Champion Samoa Joe, Christopher Daniels, CM Punk and Steve Corino is probably not their best work. The match also has to follow the scramble cage, and the backstage fallout may have had to do with it. Steve Corino?s introduction is interesting, especially the fans reaction to Lex Luger?s name being mentioned, and Christopher Daniels? sense of humour coming through. The match is watchable but considering the caliber of the talent could have been much more.

The show is rounded out with The Briscoe Brothers, managed by Jim Cornette, challenging Izzy & Dixie of Special K for the tag titles, Matt Stryker vs. Justin Credible, Xavier & England?s Nigel McGinness facing the Purists -- Tony Marmaluke and John Walters, and a Field of Honor match between Dan Maff and Colt Cabana.

It?s a good example of what makes Ring of Honor one of the top independent companies in North America, with truly something for every type of fan. You can order Main Event Spectacles and other Ring of Honor DVDs at the newly relaunched www.rohwrestling.com
