Fan loyalty earns Winnipeg treat
Rewarded with double dose of WWE
By TAMMY MARLOWE - Winnipeg Sun

Die-hard wrestling fans in Winnipeg persuaded WWE to reward the loyal following with two high-energy television events in as many days, says the president of the league's Canadian arm. "Winnipeg earned it. They're probably some of the best fans in the country, no doubt about it, let alone the world," said WWE Canada President Carl De Marco. "I think the crowd is going to make it very memorable."

WWE's Monday Night Raw program will be broadcast live from the Winnipeg Arena on TSN tomorrow night, with Smackdown! taped Tuesday for an upcoming episode.

De Marco will fly into the city tonight to be part of what he calls "an incredible two nights."

Winnipeg fans had been writing, calling and e-mailing WWE's Toronto offices over the last few months, begging for another televised event to come to town. The organization last filmed here in 1995.

WWE officials wanted to honour their long-time supporters in the city -- as well as the Winnipeg Arena -- so they agreed to pack up 13 tractor-trailers filled with pyrotechnics and lights and head for the 'Peg.

"This is a very rare situation that WWE would do back-to-back nights ... I don't know if we'll ever do that again in Winnipeg. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," said De Marco, adding tickets have been sold to wrestling fans all over the country.

"This is going to be an event that everybody's going to go to."

De Marco said WWE is proud of hometown hero Chris Jericho, who will receive the Key to the City and the Order of the Buffalo tomorrow. He's excited to see how fans react to Y2J in the ring, too.

"That's his home, that's his heart and I can't wait to see that," he said. "I think Monday is going to be incredible for Chris Jericho."
