Jericho romance on the rocks
Y2J brings sizzling Trish Stratus storyline to Alberta WWE shows
By TJ MADIGAN - Calgary Sun

Despite the early morning interview time, Chris Jericho is just as zany on the phone as he is on Monday Night Raw each week. I asked Y2J if, after his on-screen romance with WWE's babe of the year, he ever looks in the mirror and thinks: "I can't believe I just got to make out with Trish Stratus"?

"Actually," Jericho retorts, without missing a beat, "I imagine she looks in the mirror and thinks, 'I can't believe I just got to make out with Chris Jericho!' "

Y2J, who is in the midst of a storyline war with Stratus and her new beau Christian, will be bringing his wisecracking wrestling routine to Edmonton next weekend for Backlash, the city's first big- league pay-per-view.

On April 19, he'll follow up with an appearance at the Monday Night Raw show in Calgary, which Jericho admits will be a homecoming of sorts.

"I lived in Calgary for seven years, so I love coming back and wrestling at the Saddledome," he says.

"The fans are great, the people are great and I wish it was a more regular stop for us.

"I can't say enough about how great Calgary is."

He means it.

The last time Y2J strutted his stuff in the city, he broke character after his match to give an impromptu 'thank you' to the faithful fans at the Saddledome.

"I just felt compelled to say that Calgary is a great wrestling city with great wrestling tradition," he recalls.

"I'm proud to say I trained at the Hart brothers camp.

"It's part of my history, it's part of what made me into what I am today."

Jericho won't be coming to town at the top of the card this time around (that spot is reserved for Edmontonian Chris Benoit) but Y2J insists he's happy with the way his career has played out and wouldn't have it any other way.

"I treat it as if I'm the star of the show every night anyway, so whether I'm on first or I'm on last, it doesn't matter to me.

"I think my fan base will agree I'm still one of the most entertaining guys on the show and I'm still one of the MVPs of Raw.

"That's the true secret of making it in the wrestling business.

"You take what you're given, you make the best of it and you always put on the best show no matter what.

"That's the way I treat wrestling in the WWE and that's the way I treat it when I play with Fozzy."

Fozzy, for those who don't know, is Jericho's heavy metal band.

Originally, they were a cover band -- its tongue-in-cheek bio states while Fozzy was touring Japan in the '80s its material was stolen by the biggest metal acts of the day. But Fozzy has since transitioned into a serious rock 'n' roll outfit and will be showcasing its third CD at The Whiskey nightclub immediately following the Raw show.

"It's fun for me to wear two hats in the same night and pull double duty -- wrestling at the Saddledome then going straight down to The Whiskey afterwards," Jericho says.

"It's going to be a double-shot of Jericho, so all the Jerichoholics and the Fozzy fanatics get their fill for the rest of the year."

Don't expect Christian and Trish Stratus to be cheering him on, though.

He'll be fighting his former best friend and ex-flame in a two-on-one handicap match the night before, at Backlash.

"It's been a seven-month storyline with Christian and Trish and I wrote quite a bit of it myself, so it's been a lot of fun," says the self-proclaimed King of Bling Bling.

"It's a different aspect of the business but, if you don't have the right storyline, the match doesn't mean as much.

"I will have to give Trish a spanking, though," he adds, unable to resist the opportunity to slip back into character and take a parting shot at his storyline nemesis.

"Then she can look in the mirror and say, 'I can't believe I just got spanked by Chris Jericho, too!' "

Backlash goes down next Sunday from Rexall Place in Edmonton, with Raw rocking the 'Dome April 19.

Tickets are still available for both shows.
