Winnipeg given 'Raw' deal
By TAMMY MARLOWE - Winnipeg Sun

Live from Winnipeg ... it's WWE Raw! World Wrestling Entertainment -- lead by the city's most famous grappler, Chris Jericho -- will be putting on a televised event at the Winnipeg Arena this summer.

The July 5 card will be broadcast throughout North America on TSN and Spike TV and will feature many of the stars of the Raw lineup -- including Triple H and Stone Cold Steve Austin.

WWE kingpin Vince McMahon will make an appearance, along with announcers Jim Ross and Jerry "The King" Lawler. Red River College graduate Chris Jericho, a huge WWE draw, will also appear in the ring.

WWE live event consultant Bob Holliday said Winnipeg was an obvious choice.

"It's proven time after time to be one of the leading cities and supporters of WWE. It's got a very rich heritage," Holliday said.

The last time WWE went live from Winnipeg was in 1995, with pay-per-view special In Your House.

The TV special was one of the most successful pay-per-view shows for the WWE at the time.

As many as 17 tractor-trailer units loaded with equipment will arrive in Winnipeg to set up for the event. Over the course of three days, up to 500 hotel-night stays will be logged.

"It's a little bit of a boost to the city," Holliday said.

Ticket sales will be announced soon.
