Smackdown: Talk takes down action
By JAYA ROOPANSINGH -- SLAM! Wrestling
This is the first full Smackdown! show I've watched in months. I watched it straight off the TV, not able to fast forward anything. I watched their No Way Out (NWO) PPV and thought it was great. They did surprise me by finally giving Eddie his just dues. So since SLAM! needed a volunteer for a Smackdown! review I thought Okay, I'll watch a full show and do the report. Now that it's done I have just one thing to say. I'm going back to the VCR!
Smackdown! starts with Paul E welcoming everyone. He says that Eddie Guererro is the new champion to his surprise and that Brock Lesnar would not be there tonight. He announces that Eddie will make his first title defence tonight against his nephew, Chavo Jr. and there will be a special guest referee.
Kurt Angle comes out and congratulates Eddie. He says that he knew Eddie could do it and is honoured to be facing him at Wrestlemania. He then leads the crowd in a lame chant of hip hip hurrah.
Cena comes out and insults his whole promo. He says that Eddie does deserve props but West Coast style and leads the crowd in a Latino heat chant.
Cena gives it up to Kurt that he won the triple threat. Then says that Eddie is going to kick Kurt's butt. Angle then suggest that he kicks Cena’s MC Hammer butt right now. Cena says that he’s like Hammer because "You can’t touch this". Heyman breaks it up and says that he makes the matches. He says that he wants them to be a tag team against the Bashams.
The Bashams Vs Angle and Cena
Danny Basham tries to out wrestle Angle? Kurt puts him down in an arm bar. He reverses out. Kurt sends him into the ropes and gives a big clothesline. Cena gets the tag and goes for Danny but Danny strike Cena’s knee. He makes a tag to Doug. Cena gets Doug down until Danny sends Cena down. The Bashams find an opening. Cena gets back on the offence. All four are in. They send the Bashams out. Cena starts arguing with Kurt about Kurt accidentally ran into Cena. A pushing match insues. Commercial Break ....
They show commercials of the press conference in Edmonton.
Back to the show and Doug has Cena on the mat with his knee twisted up. Danny comes in and puts the same move on Cena with some elbow drops on the side of the knee. They continue to keep on Cena’s knee. Danny gives Cena a "knee breaker" and then a half crab on Cena.
Cena finally gets a kick to the mid-section and then a back drop. Tag to Kurt and German suplex on Danny. High body slam on Doug. He goes for Danny who pushes him into Doug who clothesline Angle down. Angle gets back up and pushes Doug out. He goes for the Angle slam but Doug slams him out of the ring. Cena tags himself in gets the win. Angle goes in for a stare down but then applauds him.
Winner: Angle & Cena
They show what happened with the cruiserweight match at NWO
They show what happened last month when "Sparksplug" Bob Holly made the Big Show tap out by choking him with a chair.
Rey Mysterio goes to see Heyman. I wish they'd take that mask off as Rey Rey is so cute! (Sorry Mr. Clevett, but he is) Heyman says that he's sick of hearing his wrestlers whine. Rey says that he's not going to complain about losing his match at No Way Out unfairly and that he just wants a rematch. Heyman respects that and wishes more of his wrestlers would be like that. He says that if Chavo wins tonight against Eddie, Rey gets a shot at both titles next week. He says that Rey has to take the night off. Rey agrees.
They introduce the new WWE Champion, Eddie. Fans really popped for him! Confetti falls from the sky while Eddie goes to the ring making his way through the crowd. Red, white and green balloons fall from the sky. Eddie pops some as he interacts with some lucky fans ringside.
When they come back Eddie is still in the ring and they're still chanting for him. Eddie starts to talk and has genuine tears in his eyes. He asks "what's the fuss about, me?" He says that he's not just the champion all his fans are champions too. One fan shouts out Viva La Rasa and he yells it out to a HUGE pop. He thanks all those who supported him and speaks something in Spanish to all those that didn't support him. I really wish I knew what he was saying. It was a great promo.
Chavito then comes out to spoil things for his uncle. He says that he won the cruiserweight title in one of his most important career matches and there was no party for him. He says that Eddie is stealing his time to shine. It is exactly like the feud between Bret and Owen Hart. The slight difference is Eddie doesn't claim to be a good guy, he's Chavo's uncle and his older brother is supporting Chavo because they're father and son. WWE has tried the brother feud many times in the hopes they could recreate something mildly as good as Bret and Owen. With this close knit family and slight differences they're finally getting it right.
US Championship Match Big Show VS Bob Holly
Michael Cole makes the usual WWE overstating blunder by saying The Big Show is the largest athlete in the world today. Can you classify Show as an ATHLETE??? Entertainer? Yes! Athlete? Um... On to the match!
Holly runs into the ring and attacks Show from behind. If he'd done that just three years ago he would have had heat for a sneak attack! Not tonight though. The crowd gave a big pop for him. I don't understand why but they did. Show finally gets the upper hand and squashes him.
Winner: Big Show and still US Champ.
Before Show can celebrate his victory Cena comes out and starts talking his usual trash talk. Thankfully he challenges Show to a match for the US belt at Wrestlemania 20. Show accepted with a little trash talking of his own, but you know Cena has to have the last word. It was really entertaining. Please, just don't make it another three-way and throw that Holly in it!!!
Josh Matthews is seen in the back and announces that he's seen Lesnar.
They show what happened at NWO between Brock Lesnar and Bill Goldberg.
Lesnar comes out the ring. He says he doesn't understand why the fans are booing him. He says that he believes he was the greatest champion of all time and that he's an American citizen and an outstanding athlete, therefore he should be cheered as a Champion. He says that Eddie is a lying, cheating champion who would probably pond the belt away. He vows that he'll be Champion again but first he wants revenge on Goldberg. The Goldberg chants begin. In a plea to Vince McMahon he gets down on his hands and knees and begs Vince to give him Goldberg at Wrestlemania.
They show Sable and Torrie Wilson doing some promotion work for their double team Playboy spread. (A complete waste of time.) Tazz and Cole mention that Stacey and Jackie were not happy that Playboy chose Sable and Torrie over them. (Please don't tell me that a part of my money towards Wrestlemania is going to go to this crap!)
They show what happened at Raw between Kane and Undertaker and showed that the Undertaker is on the cover of the Smackdown! magazine.
In the back, Chavo Sr. has been attacked much like Eddie and Kurt were in the past. Kurt tells Paul that he doesn't care about Sr. but it's still not right. He says that it has to be stopped and that Paul E. could be next.
When they come back Paul E runs after Kurt and tells him that he's right and that since Sr. can't be referee Kurt will be. Kurt protests to no avail.
The WWE Champion Eddie Guererro VS the cruiserweight champion Chavo Guererro - World Title Match
Eddie starts things off by throwing the world belt to Chavo. While Chavo is distracted with catching the belt Eddie clotheslines him to the mat. Chavo gets Eddie in the corner and Eddie gets out with a poke to the eyes. No call by the ref, Angle. Eddie has Chavo in a sleeper and then continues to really choke him. As Angle tries to get a better view Eddie keeps swinging around so that Angle can't see the choke. Chavo breaks with an arm bar take down. Eddie gets a tilta world back drop. Chavo gives Eddie his own version of a triple vertical suplex combo. He then climbs to the top turnbuckle for a frog splash but Eddie gets the knees up.
Eddie back body drops Chavo to the outside. Sr. comes out and distracts Eddie long enough for Chavo to get back in and attack Eddie. Latino Heat turns things around and gives the original version of the triple vertical suplex combo. He then goes for the frog splash but Sr. pulls his son out of harms way. Rey Rey comes out and does a modified 619 off the ring post to Sr. He jumps of the ring apron and takes Sr. down to the floor. Security breaks it up and has Rey leave.
When we come back Eddie has hurt his knee from his miss with the frog splash. Chavo is working it over. He puts on a modified sharpshooter from the front. Eddie wiggles out only to be put in the "Indian death-lock" soon after. Chavo lets go and then puts on a modified half Boston crab. Eddie kicks his way out into a tilta world back drop on Chavito. Chavo has Eddie in the turnbuckle and Eddie gets a scissors head takedown. Chavo still gets Eddie down and then goes to the top. Eddie gets up and catches him on the turnbuckle. They both go spiralling off. Chavo seems to be cut. Eddie gets a second wind and goes for the frog splash. He goes for the cover but Angle doesn't count.
Angle beats the snot out of the new champ. Rey comes out to help but gets a powerbomb for his efforts. Chavo leaves quietly while Angle continues to open Eddie up and demolish him. After a 10 minute beating, Angle gets the belt and waits for Eddie to get up. When he does he gets clocked with the gold right between the eyes. Kurt leaves a bloody champ in the ring while he poses with a smile at the top of the ramp.
Winner: the Referee, Angle. The actual bout I guess went to a no contest. Technically it's still going. There was no end bell. At least I don't think there was one.
I watched a whole two hour Smackdown! show to get three matches. I'm definitely sticking to video tape so I could fast-forward all the talk. I can't even say that all three matches were good. The athleticism in each was okay, but not interesting. In the main event the action was awesome but is that enough? NO! Most people only buy stuff if there is at least three good matches. The only thing I saw worth watching was Angle, Cena and Eddie. On Smackdown! there just isn't enough action. It was horrible to endure!
