TNA: X division continues to soar
By JAYA ROOPANSINGH -- SLAM! Wrestling

The NWA started making waves in pro wrestling when the X Division hit the scene but the division raised the bar for the whole sport when they had their first Ultimate X match. Last week's Ultimate X2 was the final grabber for me to start tuning in. I must admit, this is the first NWA PPV I've ever seen and I must say it was more than I expected. The matches were intense, the wrestlers were off the page and my God, the commentators were calling the play-by-play in the ring! Who woulda thunk it?

The PPV starts out with Abyss (who looked like the misbegotten child of Mankind and Kane), Jeff Jarrett and Don Callis from last week's show. Jarrett is on the phone looking at a dry erase board with a list of all the things he was planning on doing. He asked if he could finally tell everyone the "big secret" and whoever he is on the phone with apparently agreed.

Footage of a bleached blonde barbie dancing in a cage. Yeah, that's the high quality wrestling show that's going to knock mainstream off it's feet!

Match #1: Red Shirt Security Vs. America's Most Wanted (AMW) : Rawhide strap match

James Storm starts things out with Kevin Northcutt. He pounds Northcutt down to the floor then nails him with a drop kick to the head. Legend's in, and Storm gets him in the corner, then slingshots Northcutt into Legend and then takes them down with a clothesline. After being mercilessly beaten with the straps Storm finally makes a tag to Chris Harris and a four man brawl begins. Harris has a Sharpshooter on Northcutt until Legend breaks it up. There is a roll up on Harris then a reversal and a pin. Red Shirt's not happy so they tie the neck of Harris up on the ropes with the rawhide strap and throw him over. A double team on Storm starts until Harris frees himself.

Winners: America's Most Wanted

Next, is a look back on the Ultimate X2 match from last week's episode.

Again with the girls! Is this the same organization that Sting worked for after he said he couldn't be apart of WWE because it was too immoral for him? Hmmmm.

Match #2: Low Ki Vs. The Fallen Angel Christopher Daniels Vs. Michael Shane : X Triple Threat Match for #1 Contender to the X title

Low Ki and Daniels stand in the ring and argue with each other while Michael Shane makes his way down the ramp. When Shane sees an opening he attacks Low Ki from behind but Low Ki shrugs it off. Shane then tries to pick on Daniels but he too shrugs away Shane. Finally Daniels and Low Ki lock up and Shane ends up throwing Daniels aside while he works over Low Ki. He then throws Low Ki out to the floor right into Daniels. Shane continues to hold off both competitors. For a brief moment Low Ki and Daniels work as a team. Daniels holds Shane up while Low Ki springs off the ropes and lands a kick right in Shane's head. Daniels continues to hold Shane down while Low Ki lays in two stiff kicks to Shane's chest. He lines him up for a third big one. Shane gazes up and ducks. Low Ki's kick almost knocks Daniels unconscious. Low Ki briefly looks over at Daniels then continues to fight with Shane.

Low Ki works on Shane's injured arm and then slaps an arm bar submission on. Daniels breaks it up and gets a STO from Low Ki. Shane goes to the top and delivers a flying elbow to break up the STO. Low Ki gets up and sends Shane to the corner, hand-spring cartwheel into a kick and just when you think he's got him, The Franchise Shane Douglas comes out Low Ki gets distracted and boom!....super kick a roll up for the pin.

Winner and #1 Contender to the X title, Michael Shane

Antonio Pena, owner of AAA, comes out to announce they're officially hooked up with TNA. Also, on February 11th, there will be a match for AAA America's X Cup. The match will feature AAA's four best wrestlers and TNA's four best X division wrestlers. Cue the clips of some AAA shows and X-division matches.

Match #3: Simon Diamond Vs. David Young
w/ Glenn Gilberti as special guest referee

Shouldn't have been put after an X division match with Low Ki. The stipulation was that the loser would leave the group. Glenn tries to make peace and make them shake hands. Young extends his hand and gets it slapped away, twice. Then, he slaps Diamond right across the face. The brawl begins. They go out to the floor and Young is slammed into the rails. Back inside Young goes out for a steel chair but Glenn won't let him use it. Diamond in control and about to go for the pin when Glenn grabs the chair and nails an unsuspecting Diamond. Glenn then pulls Young who makes a cover for the three count. A double team starts and Johnny Swinger comes to the rescue.

Winner: David Young

A look back on the Shane Douglas and Elix Skipper encounters

More girls. I can't believe I miss the Nitro Girls! At least dancing was something they worked hard on.

Match #4 Shane Douglas w/ Traci Vs. Elix Skipper

An inset pops up with the Sandman looking for Raven.

Shane toys with Elix slapping and throwing him around. Holds Elix up for a suplex and leaves him there for a while then slams him down hard and fast. Elix tried to mount a come back by throwing some punches and kicks. He gets Shane down but is then tripped by Traci. It's a typical girl on the side move. He turns and grabs her hair and pulls her up but Shane gets to his feet to break up the confrontation. Shane then makes him tap. However, he decides it's not enough and beats on Elix some more until Christopher Daniels comes running down. Michael Shane then comes out which brings Low Ki flying down the ramp way. Traci goes after Elix. Shane decides to retreat and pulls Michael Shane by his side. The former Triple X send the new Franchise regime back to the dressing room.

Winner: Shane Douglas

Elix begs his former mates to make up. Daniels and Elix shake hands, and then Daniels extends his hand to Low Ki. After careful consideration Low Ki takes a walk instead. Look back at how Kid Kash lost his signatures to Don Harris and how he promised that he would get them back in blood.

More 'dancing' bimbos. Okay, if you insist on having this kind of entertainment at least get girls that can dance!

Match #6: Kid Kash Vs. Chris Vaughn

Kash comes out and starts yelling at Tiny again to sign the forms or be beaten. Television froze on me. When it comes back, Kash has the upper hand on Vaughn. Kash beats the head of Vaughn until it starts to bleed. Vaughn then starts to mount a comeback but Kash stops it. He gets Vaughn with a double arm bar modified pile driver. Rolls for the pin. Kash gets the contract and has Vaughn sign it in blood. He continues to beat on Vaughn until Tiny can't take anymore and comes in to save him. He takes off his shirt (picture A-train with rolls) and steam rolls Kash. Kash still comes back until Don Harris comes out. This brings out the Red Shirt Security which brings out AMW.

Winner: Kid Kash

Review of the feud between Sandman, Raven, James Mitchell and the Gathering.

They continue to film the girls. Why? We don't know.

Match # 5: The Gathering w/ Father James Mitchell Vs. Sandman and (maybe) Raven : Singapore Canes on a Pole Match

It was good to see the original beer guzzler smashing cans and swinging canes again. Sandman waited for Raven as much as he could then he began to beat CM Punk and Julio Dinero with a beer can. Sandman uses them against each other sending one into the other. The Gathering get canes and play whack the drunk. Sandman pulls out a Russian leg sweep and takes the canes to extract some revenge. Mitchell makes the distraction and double super kick lays Sandman down for a three count.

Winner: The Gathering

Cut to Erik Watts who tells Goldilocks that she better stay behind the scenes.

Sandman is in the ring and says that he should have never trusted Raven. Why not? He only tried to steal your family and end your life in ECW? He says he swore on his son's life that he wouldn't make a pack with the devil. Then he said if everyone wanted the devil that's what they'll get next week when he brings Balls Mahoney to tag with him against the Gathering.

Lights go out and Don Callis announces the big surprise. "Johnny Fairplay" (Jon Dalton) from Survivor fame will appear in the NWA next week.

Match #6 Jeff Jarrett & Abyss Vs. AJ Styles & Erik Watts

If Jeff loses Watts is out. If Watts loses AJ gets another title shot. Watts doesn't wait to get in the ring it starts outside. AJ and Watts double team on Abyss. AJ takes Abyss down and out. Watts beats on Jarrett until AJ takes over. Jarrett has sleeper on AJ but he elbows out. Watts comes in. He jumps up and then kicks Jarrett. No clever name like 'Chick Kick' when a guy does it, eh? AJ does a modified suicide dive out to the floor on Abyss. Referee takes a bump and Jarrett uses it to go out for a chair. He hits Watts and goes for the pin. The bell rings but Mike Tenay tells the ref that Jeff used the chair and it was too important of a match for it to end that way. Ref agrees and it continues. The masked man that attacked Jarrett last week comes back and attacks him again. While Jarrett is fighting him off. AJ and Watts are double teaming Abyss. Watts gives a chokeslam and gets a two count. Goldi comes out and says she won't be ignored and gives a low blow. Watts comes in for the roll up pin. Callis comes out and says that if that decision sticks he quits. No one cares. So they threaten AJ's shot at the title and Watts says if AJ doesn't get the shot Watts will quit.

Winner: Watts and Styles

Next week

  • David Young & Gilberti Vs. Johnny Swinger & Simon Diamond

  • AMW Vs. Red Shirt Security for #1 Contender spot

  • Shane Douglas Vs. Elix & Christopher Daniels in a handicap match

As my first time watching the show, I had a lot of expectations and they were met above and beyond. The only thing I'd rather have seen was a girl like Traci beating the crap out of a girl like Goldi. I'd much rather that then an obvious ratings ploy to get more fans who don't give a crap about wrestling. Also, the match between Jarrett and Watts was pointless. They're right back where they started. You don't know if AJ's getting the title shot and you don't know if Watts will be gone from the company. Overall, the X division's match made the PPV for me - it rocked!
